Start with the Main Scenario Quest
For a first character, keep the Main Scenario Quest as your main route through A Realm Reborn. Your starting city depends on your first class, but all routes converge into the same wider Eorzea story before the first group dungeons.
- Follow the meteor-shaped MSQ marker before normal side quests.
- Use the official starter guide and Lodestone play guide for current account, UI, and duty finder basics.
- When the MSQ asks you to travel between city-states, keep your aetherytes attuned so cleanup is easier later.
Unlock your first duties
Patch 2.0 introduces group content gradually. The early required dungeon line begins with Sastasha, then Tam-Tara Deepcroft, then Copperbell Mines. Local TJPedia duty pages list Sastasha at level 15 through the quest It's Probably Pirates, Tam-Tara Deepcroft at level 16 through Fire in the Gloom, and Copperbell Mines at level 17 through Into a Copper Hell.
- Queue with Duty Finder or Duty Support where available.
- Read the duty's quick facts before queueing if you want level, party size, and required quest details.
- Do not farm low-level dungeons for perfect gear while MSQ gear is still carrying you forward.
Keep class and job quests current
Do your class quests when they appear, then equip your job stone once the job unlock is available. This is one of the easiest ways to avoid feeling weak at level 30 and beyond, because job quests and job actions are part of normal character progression.
- Check your class/job quest tracker whenever you gain a few levels.
- Keep one combat job close to MSQ level instead of spreading every job evenly on a first playthrough.
- Save serious crafting and gathering grinds until travel, retainers, and roulettes are unlocked.
Expect primal trials during the story
A Realm Reborn teaches trial structure through primal battles. The Bowl of Embers is the first normal Ifrit trial in the local wiki, listed as a level 20 light-party duty through the quest Lord of the Inferno. Later MSQ trials continue that pattern at higher levels.
- Watch for duty unlock text in the MSQ before queueing.
- If a fight has a special object or add phase, target it first when the game clearly marks it as urgent.
- Normal-mode ARR trials are story duties, not Extreme farms. Save Extreme versions for later collection goals.
Finish Operation Archon
The 2.0 finale routes through Castrum Meridianum and the Praetorium. Local wiki data lists both as level 50 duties with an item level requirement of 42, with Castrum Meridianum tied to Rock the Castrum and the Praetorium tied to The Ultimate Weapon. These duties close the launch MSQ arc and open the path toward post-ARR patches.
- Do not stop at level 50 just because your character hit cap for ARR; the MSQ continues into post-ARR before Heavensward.
- Expect long story framing around the finale compared with ordinary leveling dungeons.
- After the finale, move into the post-ARR roadmap before jumping to Heavensward.
Level 50 cleanup after the credits
After the 2.0 credits, focus on MSQ continuation first, then unlock optional systems in batches. The Binding Coil of Bahamut begins with Primal Awakening according to local wiki data and is best treated as optional legacy story/high-end content, not a required MSQ stop. Crystal Tower belongs to the post-ARR path and should be handled in the post-ARR guide.
- Prioritize post-ARR MSQ progression before optional dungeon cleanup.
- Mark Coils as optional story content unless you specifically want the Bahamut raid narrative.
- Use the patch pages for 2.1 through 2.5 when you want the full road to Ishgard.
