Vanu Vanu

Heavensward

Overview

The Vanu Vanu are a large, avian beast tribe indigenous to the floating island chains of the Sea of Clouds in Abalathia's Spine. Recognizable by their rotund, bipedal forms, vibrant plumage, and distinctive, melodic speech patterns, they are a people whose culture, spirituality, and daily existence are intrinsically tied to the sky and the winds. While often appearing jovial and gentle, they possess considerable physical strength and a deep, territorial connection to their aerial homeland. During the events of Heavensward, the tribe becomes divided by a schism that leads to the summoning of the primal Bismarck, threatening the delicate ecosystem of the entire Sea of Clouds.

History & Lore

Physiology and Society

The Vanu Vanu are imposing in stature, with round, feathered bodies supported by powerful legs and clawed feet. Their wings, while not suited for sustained flight, allow for impressive leaps and glides between the islands they call home. Their heads are crowned with colorful crests, and they communicate in a unique, repetitive cadence, often doubling words for emphasis (e.g., "friend-friend," "sky-sky").

Their society is built upon a profound harmony with the unique environment of the Sea of Clouds. They construct their settlements—clusters of woven nests and simple structures—on the floating landmasses, utilizing native materials like skyborne lumber and the wool of the native Zu beasts. Their diet consists of the abundant aerial flora and fauna, and their traditions, including rhythmic dances and chants, celebrate the wind currents and celestial bodies that govern their world. Central to their belief system is a reverence for the natural forces that sustain the islands, a philosophy that historically maintained the balance of their home.

The Schism: Zundu and Vundu

This balance was shattered by the arrival of outsiders, namely the Garlean Empire and later, Ishgardian sky pirates. The encroachment and resource competition fostered fear and resentment among many Vanu Vanu. This tension catalyzed a deep cultural rift, splitting the tribe into two factions:

  • The Zundu: This faction, whose name implies "peaceful winds," seeks to maintain the old ways of coexistence with the sky and its other inhabitants. The Zundu believe in diplomacy and adaptation rather than conflict. They are wary but not inherently hostile to outsiders who show respect for their home.
  • The Vundu: Meaning "storm winds," the Vundu advocate for aggressive expansion and the reclamation of what they see as stolen territory. Consumed by anger and a desire for dominance, the Vundu reject the passive ways of their kin, viewing strength and conquest as the only means to ensure their tribe's survival.

The Summoning of Bismarck

The Vundu's desperation and fervent desire for a power to crush their enemies and reclaim the skies manifested in the summoning of a primal. Drawing upon the Vanu Vanu's collective prayers to the sky and their deep-seated fear of losing their islands, the Vundu called forth Bismarck, a colossal, whale-like entity of pure wind-aspected aether.

Bismarck, however, was a catastrophic perversion of their prayers. Instead of protecting the Sea of Clouds, the primal sustains itself by devouring the floating islands themselves, processing them into aether and threatening to consume the entire habitat. The Vundu, blinded by zealotry, see this destruction as a necessary "cleansing" to make way for a new paradise, failing to grasp that they are engineering their own homeland's annihilation.

The Warrior of Light and the Zundu Alliance

The Warrior of Light's journey into the Sea of Clouds brings them into contact with both factions. After initial skirmishes with the hostile Vundu, they ally with the Zundu, who recognize the existential threat Bismarck poses. The Zundu beast tribe questline involves aiding their peaceful endeavors—helping with hunts, resolving disputes with other sky creatures, and participating in their cultural rituals—to build trust and strengthen their position.

This alliance culminates in a direct confrontation with the Vundu and their primal. With the aid of the Enterprise and its innovative armaments, the Warrior of Light and their allies assault Bismarck in the skies. The battle ends with the primal's temporary defeat, saving the Sea of Clouds from immediate dissolution and weakening the Vundu's influence.

Post-Heavensward and the Allied Quests

In the subsequent Heavensward Allied Beast Tribe Quests, which unite the Vanu Vanu, the Vath, and the Moogles, the Zundu and a faction of chastened Vundu begin the long process of reconciliation. The quests focus on addressing the lingering mistrust between the tribes and dealing with a resurgence of Bismarck, now re-summoned by Vundu holdouts. The story emphasizes healing the schism, showcasing Vanu Vanu delegates learning to work alongside their former enemies and other beast tribes for the common good, ultimately achieving a more stable and unified future for the people of the sky.

Gameplay

  • Beast Tribe Quests: The Vanu Vanu are a primary beast tribe in Heavensward. Daily quests for the Zundu faction begin in the Ok' Zundu settlement in the Sea of Clouds (X:9.4, Y:12.6), offered after completing the prerequisite main scenario quest "In Search of the Soleil."

Trivia

  • The Vanu Vanu's speech pattern and musical themes are reminiscent of various Polynesian and Pacific Islander cultures, contributing to their distinct identity.
  • Their design and concept—bird-like creatures living on floating islands—pay homage to the Floating Continent and the Viera from earlier Final Fantasy titles, though they are a wholly original creation for FFXIV.
  • The name "Vanu Vanu" itself follows their linguistic trait of repetition.
  • The schism between the Zundu and Vundu mirrors the broader themes of Heavensward, which explores how fear, history, and misunderstanding can divide people with a shared heritage.
  • The Vanu Vanu beast tribe storyline is notable for its blend of lighthearted, charming moments—such as participating in their dances—with a narrative that carries genuine ecological and cultural stakes.
