Loporrits

Endwalker

Overview

The Loporrits are a diminutive, rabbit-like beast tribe residing on the lunar surface of Mare Lamentorum. Unlike other beast tribes born of the star, the Loporrits were created directly by Hydaelyn (the ancient Venat) with a singular, solemn purpose: to construct and maintain a sanctuary ark upon the moon, intended to evacuate a portion of Etheirys's life should the planet ever face an inescapable apocalypse. With the Final Days averted in Endwalker, these earnest beings now grapple with finding a new purpose beyond their original programming, leading to a journey of cultural discovery and self-definition.

Known for their boundless enthusiasm, deeply earnest demeanor, and comically flawed understanding of surface-world life, the Loporrits provide a source of warmth and humor in Endwalker. Their associated beast tribe quests focus on crafting, as the Warrior of Light helps them refine their ark and learn about the mortals they were made to serve.

History and Lore

Creation and Original Purpose

The Loporrits were not born through natural evolution, but were meticulously designed and brought into being by Hydaelyn in the distant past. Following her transformation into the planet's ward and after sealing away Meteion, Hydaelyn foresaw a future where Etheirys might again face an existential threat. As a final act of protection for the life she cherished, she created the Loporrits and charged them with a monumental task: to transform the moon into a viable ark, or "vessel," capable of sustaining a selection of the star's inhabitants and flora.

For untold millennia, the Loporrits labored in isolation on Mare Lamentorum. They constructed sprawling, self-sustaining habitats (the "Dreamingway" and "Wakingway" complexes), developed methods for growing food in lunar soil, and studied the cultures of the surface through distant observation. Their entire society and sense of self were built around this "Divine Mandate." They awaited the "Day of Departure," when Hydaelyn would signal them to begin the evacuation, a day they believed would inevitably come.

The Arrival of the Scions and a New Reality

The Loporrits' existence remained a secret until the events of Endwalker, when the Scions of the Seventh Dawn journeyed to the moon. The tribe's initial reaction was one of sheer, unbridled joy, mistaking the arrival of mortals as the long-awaited commencement of their mission. Their leader, the sage and fatherly Livingway, alongside his more excitable colleague Curiousway, greeted the Scions as honored guests.

The Loporrits' understanding of surface life, however, was based entirely on fragmented, ancient data and distant observation, leading to profound and often humorous misunderstandings. They believed, for instance, that all mortal beings required constant, thunderous applause to thrive, and that their diet consisted solely of elaborate, multi-course "snacks."

The pivotal moment for the Loporrits came with the revelation that Hydaelyn was gone and the immediate threat of the Final Days had been averted by the Warrior of Light. The "Day of Departure" would never come. This left the tribe in a profound existential crisis. Their purpose—the very reason for their creation—was suddenly obsolete. Livingway articulated this dilemma with poignant simplicity: they were like a clock that had finished ticking, unsure of what to do next.

Finding a New Purpose

In the aftermath of Endwalker's conclusion, the Loporrits embarked on a new journey: to learn about the world they were meant to save, not as abstract data points, but as living beings with cultures, customs, and joys. The Warrior of Light aids them in this endeavor through a series of crafting-focused quests.

The Loporrits shift their focus from preparing for evacuation to preparing for connection. They seek to understand surface cuisine, art, music, and daily life, aiming to transform their ark from a sterile lifeboat into a true home that could one day welcome mortal visitors in peace, not crisis. This journey allows them to forge an identity separate from their Divine Mandate, discovering that purpose can be created and adapted, not just received.

Society and Culture

Loporrit society is highly communal, orderly, and driven by a collective sense of duty. Their culture is defined by several key traits:

  • Earnestness and Enthusiasm: Loporrits approach every task with maximum effort and positivity. Failure or misunderstanding is met not with frustration, but with renewed determination to "try again, but better!"
  • Literal-Mindedness: They interpret information with a very literal, procedural logic. This, combined with gaps in their data, leads to their famous misinterpretations of surface culture (e.g., creating "sleeping boxes" for beds based on seeing bedrooms from orbit).
  • Nomenclature: Loporrits take names ending in "-way," signifying their function or primary character trait (e.g., Livingway, Curiousway, Happyway, Dutyway). This reflects their origin as created beings with designated roles.
  • Architectural Prowess: Their skill in engineering and bio-dome construction is extraordinary, having built a fully functional, sprawling ecosystem inside the moon.
  • Childlike Wonder: Despite their age, they possess a contagious sense of wonder and innocence, especially when experiencing surface-world concepts firsthand.

Gameplay (Beast Tribe Quests)

The Loporrits serve as the crafting-focused beast tribe for Endwalker.

  • Unlock Requirements: Complete the main scenario quest "Endwalker" and reach level 80 in any Disciple of the Hand class. The questline begins with "Must Be Dreaming(way)" at Hoper's Hold in Mare Lamentorum (X:17.4, Y:16.0). Released in Patch 6.35.
  • Quest Mechanics: Daily quests involve crafting specific items requested by the Loporrits to aid their cultural education. These items often relate to their latest misunderstanding—for example, crafting furniture for a "traditional mortal leisure cave" (a pub) or ingredients for "surface celebration cakes."
  • Reputation Rewards: Increasing reputation with the Loporrits grants access to unique rewards, including minions (such as the Loporrit minion), furnishings, emotes, and mounts. A key reward is the Lunarwhisp flying mount, a graceful creature reminiscent of a lunar ray.
  • Narrative Arc: The questline's story is lighthearted and comedic, but underpinned by the tribe's sincere struggle to find belonging and a new place in the world. It culminates in them establishing a more permanent and informed connection with the people of Etheirys.

Trivia

  • The Loporrits' design and their theme of preparing an ark are subtle callbacks to the "Moon Rabbits" of various East Asian folklore, as well as the Final Fantasy IV lore of the moon being inhabited.
  • Their theme music, "The Loporrits," is a playful, whimsical tune heavy with xylophone and pizzicato strings, perfectly capturing their quirky and earnest nature.
  • Despite their comedic role, their creation story represents one of Hydaelyn's most tragic and hopeful acts—a contingency plan born of love and despair, made manifest in these endlessly optimistic beings.
  • The name "Loporrit" is likely a portmanteau of "Lop" (a breed of rabbit with drooping ears) and "porridge," a simple food, perhaps hinting at their humble, earnest nature.
