Botanist

gathering

Overview

The Botanist is a Disciple of the Land, a gathering job dedicated to the careful and respectful harvest of nature's bounty. Headquartered in the forested city-state of Gridania, Botanists are specialists in identifying, locating, and collecting a vast array of plant-based materials, from common lumber and fibrous grasses to rare medicinal herbs and exotic flowers. They serve as the foundational suppliers for numerous crafting professions, providing the essential raw materials that fuel Eorzea's economies and industries. Operating under the guiding principle of harmony with nature, a skilled Botanist must possess not only strength and endurance but also a deep understanding of botany, ecology, and the delicate balance required to harvest without harming the source.

History & Lore

The practice of botany in Gridania is deeply intertwined with the city-state's history and its unique relationship with the elementals, the sentient spirits of the Twelveswood. For generations, the people of Gridania have lived under the Pact, a strict covenant with the elementals that permits settlement and the careful use of the forest's resources in exchange for reverence and protection. The Botanists' Guild formalizes this ancient, survival-driven knowledge into a teachable discipline.

The guild is led by the gentle yet firm Lalafellin guildmaster, Fufucha. Under her guidance, apprentices learn that botany is far more than simple lumberjacking or herb-picking. It is a philosophy. Fufucha teaches that every plant has a story, a purpose, and a place in the ecosystem. A true Botanist must learn to listen to the forest, to understand the conditions that favor certain growths, and to harvest in a way that ensures the resource will endure for generations to come. This ethos stands in direct contrast to reckless exploitation, a theme often explored in the guild's quests as Botanists confront those who would strip the land bare for short-term gain.

Botanists are trained to use a variety of tools, primarily hatchets for forestry and scythes for reaping grasses and shrubs. Their expertise covers diverse biomes beyond the Black Shroud, from the sun-baked botany of Thanalan to the frigid flora of Coerthas and the alien ecosystems of later-discovered continents. They are the primary source for materials used by Carpenters (lumber), Weavers (cloth, fibers), Leatherworkers (hides, treated with tannins from plants), Alchemists (herbs, reagents), and Culinarians (vegetables, grains, seasonings). This makes their role in Eorzea's supply chain arguably more wide-reaching than that of any other gathering job.

Gameplay

Botanist is one of the three core gathering jobs (alongside Miner and Fisher). Its gameplay revolves around locating gathering points (nodes) in the open world and using abilities to extract items from them.

Core Mechanics:

  • Tools & Stats: Botanists equip a main hand hatchet or scythe and a secondary off-hand item. Their effectiveness is governed by gathering-specific attributes:
    • Gathering: Increases the chance of successfully obtaining an item from a node.
    • Perception: Increases the chance of harvesting high-quality (HQ) items and is required to attempt to gather from certain rare, high-level nodes.
    • GP (Gathering Points): A resource that regenerates over time and is spent on powerful gathering abilities.
  • Nodes: Plant and tree nodes appear on the game map and minimap when a Botanist is near. They are level-gated, requiring a minimum Botanist level to interact with.
    • Standard Nodes: Found throughout the world, these have a limited number of gathering attempts before they expire.
    • Unspoiled Nodes: Rare nodes that appear at specific real-world times and locations (Eorzean Time). They contain valuable, often high-level materials and require higher Perception to access.
    • Ephemeral Nodes: Introduced in later expansions, these are timed nodes that offer special materials for expert crafting recipes.
  • Gathering Actions: Botanists have a suite of abilities to optimize their harvest:
    • Basic Actions: Herb Call (for plants) or Lumber Call (for trees) to initiate gathering.
    • Yield Boosters: Abilities like Bountiful Harvest or Blessed Harvest that increase the number of items gathered per attempt.
    • Quality Boosters: Abilities like Sharp Vision or Field Mastery that increase the chance of obtaining HQ items or guarantee a successful gather from a difficult node.
    • Scouting: Triangulate pinpoints the location of nearby unspoiled nodes.
  • Specialization: At high levels, Botanists can undertake a quest to specialize in a particular type of botany, granting access to powerful, once-per-node abilities that greatly increase yield or quality.
  • Collectables & Scrips: Botanists can gather specific "collectable" items, which can be traded to NPCs for White and Yellow Scrips—special currencies used to purchase high-end gathering gear, manuals, and rare materials.

Questline: The Botanist class quests (levels 1-70) follow the player's growth under Fufucha's tutelage. The narrative consistently emphasizes the core conflict between necessity and conservation. Players help resolve disputes between guilds over resource rights, investigate mysterious blights affecting crops, and confront poachers and illegal loggers who threaten the delicate balance of the Twelveswood and beyond. The quests solidify the player's identity as a steward of the land, not just its harvester.

Trivia

  • Botanist (and Miner) were the first jobs to introduce the "timed node" system with A Realm Reborn, creating a dynamic gathering economy that operates on a real-time clock.
  • The design of the Botanist's Scythe tool is often more elaborate and ornate than the hatchet, with some models being highly sought-after glamour items.
  • Fufucha's name is likely a playful reference to "fufu," a Japanese onomatopoeia for the smell of fresh plants or grass.
  • In the French client, the job is called "Botaniste," and in German, it is "Gärtner" (Gardener), though its duties encompass far more than gardening.
  • Many iconic end-game crafting materials, such as those used for relic weapons or high-tier raid food, are exclusively gathered by high-level Botanists from ephemeral or unspoiled nodes.
