Overview

Yotsuyu goe Brutus is a central antagonist in Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood and one of the narrative's most complex and tragic figures. As the Garlean-appointed acting viceroy of occupied Doma, she ruled her homeland with a cruelty that made her universally despised. Her sadistic governance, however, was not born of imperial loyalty but of a deeply personal vendetta against the nation and people who subjected her to a lifetime of systemic abuse. Yotsuyu's story is a harrowing exploration of cyclical trauma, the nature of identity, and the devastating consequences of societal failure, culminating in one of the game's most emotionally charged confrontations.

History & Lore

A Life Sold and Broken

Yotsuyu was born into a poor Doman family that viewed her not as a daughter, but as a commodity. Her parents sold her into a marriage with a wealthy, abusive merchant to settle their debts. For years, she endured physical and psychological torment at her husband's hands. When he died, rather than finding freedom, she was sold again by her family—this time into a brothel. In this cycle of exploitation, every person who used, abused, or discarded her was a fellow Doman. Her suffering forged a profound, all-consuming hatred for her homeland and its people, whom she saw as fundamentally corrupt and deserving of punishment.

The Viceroy's Vengeance

When the Garlean Empire conquered Doma, Yotsuyu saw an opportunity. She offered her services to the crown prince, Zenos yae Galvus, who recognized the utility of her intimate local knowledge and, more importantly, her virulent hatred. He installed her as the acting viceroy, a puppet ruler whose brutality would keep the populace subdued. Yotsuyu embraced this role with relish. She enforced harsh policies, publicly humiliated and executed dissenters, and took particular pleasure in tormenting the noble classes who had once looked down upon her. Her infamous "name hunt" decree, which stripped Domans of their names and assigned them numbers, was a direct attack on their cultural identity and dignity. Her cruelty was her weapon, and Doma itself was her target.

The Liberation and "Tsuyu"

During the liberation of Doma Castle, Yotsuyu attempted to flee but was caught in the structure's collapse. Presumed dead, she was instead found alive but with severe amnesia by the retired samurai Gosetsu. With no memory of her past life or crimes, she reverted to a childlike, innocent state. Gosetsu, believing this to be a chance for redemption, named her Tsuyu and cared for her, protecting her true identity from the vengeful Domans.

As Tsuyu, she displayed genuine kindness, curiosity, and a fragile sweetness, forming a tender, almost familial bond with Gosetsu. This period forced the Warrior of Light and their allies to grapple with a profound moral dilemma: was Tsuyu, devoid of Yotsuyu's memories and malice, a different person? Could she be held accountable for crimes she could not remember? For a time, it seemed a fractured soul might find peace.

The Return and Ascension

This fragile peace was shattered when a confrontation with her surviving abusive brother, Asahi sas Brutus, triggered the return of Yotsuyu's memories. The weight of her past—both the atrocities she committed and the horrors she endured—crashed upon her simultaneously. Overwhelmed by this pain and rejecting Gosetsu's forgiveness as an impossible fantasy, she fully embraced her rage and despair.

Manipulated by Asahi, who sought to create a primal for the Garleans to "heroically" slay, Yotsuyu's potent emotions became the catalyst for a summoning. Drawing on the symbol of the moon—a constant, cold witness to her suffering—she fused with the newly manifested primal Tsukuyomi. In this form, she became a divine avatar of sorrow and vengeance, and the ensuing battle is as much a psychological journey through her traumatic memories as it is a physical confrontation.

Final Moments

Defeated and mortally wounded, Yotsuyu reverted to her human form. In her last moments, the facade of the cruel viceroy fell away, revealing the broken child within. Reaching out, she did not see Gosetsu, but a vision of the persimmon tree from his home and the simple, unconditional kindness he had offered her as Tsuyu. Her death offered no easy redemption, nor a satisfying condemnation. It was simply tragic—the end of a life that was systematically destroyed by its own people, leaving behind only pain and unresolved sorrow.

Gameplay

Yotsuyu appears primarily in Stormblood Main Scenario Quests as a key narrative figure.

  • Antagonist Role: She serves as the primary face of Garlean oppression in Doma throughout the first half of the expansion.
  • Duty Support: She does not participate in combat until her transformation.
  • Trial: The Minstrel's Ballad: Tsukuyomi's Pain: Yotsuyu's climax is the trial "Castrum Fluminis," where players face the primal Tsukuyomi. The battle is notable for its heavy narrative integration, phase transitions that depict key moments from her backstory, and unique mechanics themed around light and dark (representing her Tsuyu and Yotsuyu personas). The harder extreme version, "The Minstrel's Ballad: Tsukuyomi's Pain," offers a greater challenge.

Personality & Relationships

  • As Yotsuyu: Cold, sadistic, intelligent, and bitterly sarcastic. Her cruelty is calculated and personal, fueled by a deep-seated nihilism and a belief that all Domans are inherently wicked. She masks her profound vulnerability with a veneer of absolute power.
  • As Tsuyu: Innocent, naive, gentle, and eager to please. This persona represents the person Yotsuyu might have been had her life not been defined by abuse—a glimpse of a lost potential that makes her story all the more tragic.
  • Gosetsu: Her most complex relationship. He is initially her captive, then her protector, and finally the person who offers her unconditional compassion. He represents the possibility of forgiveness and a different path, a possibility she ultimately feels unworthy of accepting.
  • Zenos yae Galvus: He views her as a useful tool, appreciating the efficiency of her hatred. Their relationship is purely transactional.
  • Asahi sas Brutus: Her brother embodies the very corruption of Doman society that she hates. His final manipulation uses her trauma as a weapon, making him the direct catalyst for her destruction.

Trivia

  • Yotsuyu's name is derived from the Japanese word for "fourth night" (四夜), which carries connotations of the lunar calendar. This connects thematically to her primal form, Tsukuyomi, the moon god.
  • The persimmon tree that appears in her visions is a symbol of Gosetsu's simple, steadfast kindness and the only pure memory she possesses.
  • Her theme music, "Songs of Salt and Suffering," incorporates a music box melody that reflects the lost innocence of her childhood.
  • Yotsuyu's story arc is widely praised by the FFXIV community for its narrative depth and emotional impact, standing out as a highlight of the Stormblood expansion.
