Alchemist

Overview

The Alchemist is a crafting discipline dedicated to the art and science of transmutation, the process of manipulating materials at a fundamental level to create new substances with potent properties. Operating from the Frondale's Phrontistery in Ul'dah, Alchemists are the premier producers of consumable items in Eorzea, crafting everything from simple healing potions to complex stat-boosting elixirs, antidotes, and even the catalysts and weapons used by magical combatants. Their craft sits at the intersection of rigorous science, herbalist tradition, and arcane theory, making them indispensable to adventurers and civilians alike. Under the often ethically ambiguous guidance of Guildmaster Severian, practitioners learn that the power to reshape matter carries with it profound responsibility.

History & Lore

Philosophical and Practical Origins

Alchemy in Eorzea is an ancient practice with roots in both the empirical study of natural philosophy and the mystical traditions of elementalism. Early alchemists sought not only to create practical remedies but to understand the fundamental principles governing the transformation of matter—the elusive concept of the Philosopher's Stone. While this ultimate goal remains theoretical, centuries of experimentation have yielded a robust and highly useful body of knowledge.

The modern Alchemists' Guild in Ul'dah formalized these practices, establishing standardized recipes, safety protocols (often ignored by more ambitious members), and a system for training new apprentices. Ul'dah, as a mercantile hub and city-state built upon mineral wealth, provided the perfect environment for alchemy to flourish, with a ready supply of reagents and a constant demand for its products from merchants, mercenaries, and the Sultanate's military.

The Frondale's Phrontistery and Guildmaster Severian

The guildhall, known as the Frondale's Phrontistery, is a cluttered repository of knowledge filled with bubbling alembics, rare reagents, and precarious stacks of ancient tomes. It is overseen by Severian, a genius whose intellectual curiosity frequently outpaces his ethical considerations. Severian embodies the dual nature of alchemy: a deep desire to heal and improve life, tempered by a dangerous fascination with the limits of manipulation, including the creation of potent toxins and unstable concoctions. His leadership ensures that the guild's questline is as much a lesson in morality as it is in methodology, forcing apprentices to confront the potential consequences of their craft.

The Alchemist's Art

Alchemy is distinct from simple herbalism or apothecary work. It involves processes like dissolution, separation, and recombination, often using magically-imbued catalysts to achieve transformations impossible through mundane chemistry. An Alchemist must understand the elemental affinities of ingredients, the synergistic effects of combining them, and the precise conditions required for stable synthesis.

Their creations are broadly categorized:

  • Restoratives: Healing potions, ethers to restore magicka, and high-potency versions of both.
  • Curatives: Antidotes, eye drops, echo drops, and other remedies that remove debilitating status ailments.
  • Enhancements: Tonics and elixirs that temporarily boost attributes like strength, dexterity, or vitality.
  • Offensive Concoctions: Poisons and damaging oils, the creation and use of which are subjects of intense ethical debate within the guild.
  • Catalysts and Arms: Wands, scepters, books, and grimoires that channel a caster's aether, as well as the alchemical reagents required for high-level crafting in other disciplines.

Gameplay

Becoming an Alchemist

Any character with a level 10 Disciple of War or Magic class can become an Alchemist. The quest "Way of the Alchemist" is obtained from the NPC Lydirlona in the Steps of Thal, Ul'dah (X:12.2, Y:13.2). Upon completion, the player receives their first alembic and mortar and is officially enrolled in the guild.

Crafting Mechanics

Alchemists, like all crafters, use the Crafting Log to synthesize items. They rely heavily on materials gathered by the Disciple of the Land classes:

  • Botanist: Provides the vast majority of herbs, flowers, logs, and plant-based extracts.
  • Miner: Supplies metals, crystals, stones, and earth-based reagents like alumen.
  • Fisher: Sources rare aquatic components such as certain oils, shells, and fish parts.

The crafting process involves using abilities to increase progress, maintain item quality, and efficiently manage Crafting Points (CP). Successful synthesis requires careful attention to recipe levels, material quality, and gear stats (Craftsmanship, Control, CP).

Job Quests

The Alchemist job quests (every 5 levels from 1-50) follow the player's growth under Severian's tutelage. The narrative consistently explores themes of responsibility. Early quests involve proving one's skill and helping the guild with mundane orders. The story soon delves into more complex territory, such as dealing with the unintended side-effects of alchemical research, confronting former guild members who use their knowledge for malicious purposes, and wrestling with requests to create dangerous substances, even for ostensibly good causes. The questline emphasizes that an Alchemist's true skill lies not just in following recipes, but in understanding the full impact of their work on the world.

Endgame and Specialization

At higher levels, Alchemists craft the consumables essential for endgame raiding, including the highest-tier stat potions (e.g., Grade 7 Tinctures). They also create glamour prisms, housing items, and key materials for other crafting jobs. With the introduction of the Specialist system, Alchemists can designate their craft for specializations, gaining access to powerful exclusive recipes and abilities for that discipline.

Trivia

  • The Alchemist's primary tool, the alembic, is an ancient distillation apparatus used by real-world alchemists.
  • Many iconic Final Fantasy items, such as the Phoenix Down and Elixir, are crafted exclusively by Alchemists.
  • The guild's location in the Steps of Thal, Ul'dah's undercity, is fitting, as historical alchemy was often practiced on the fringes of society and academia.
  • Severian's name and character—a brilliant but morally complex guide—may be a nod to the protagonist of Gene Wolfe's classic science fantasy series The Book of the New Sun, who is also named Severian and is a member of the guild of torturers. This is a community observation and has not been officially confirmed by Square Enix.
  • Alchemists are the only crafters who can synthesize their own high-level crafting gear (e.g., the Forgemaster's set), creating a self-sufficient loop for gearing.
