Overview

The Bozjan Southern Front is a large-scale field operation zone introduced in Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. It is a war-torn region of southern Bozja, serving as the primary battleground where the Bozjan Resistance wages a desperate campaign to liberate their occupied homeland from the Garlean Empire's IVth Imperial Legion. Designed for coordinated play by large groups of adventurers, the Southern Front blends open-world skirmishes, structured large-scale engagements, and a progressive ranking system within a persistent, dynamic battlefield.

More than just a combat zone, the Southern Front is the central stage for the "Save the Queen" storyline, a narrative delving into Bozja's tragic history, the legacy of its mythical Queen Gunnhildr, and the personal struggles of those fighting for freedom. It also forms the foundation for the Shadowbringers expansion's relic weapon quests, the Resistance Weapons, offering a major endgame progression path outside of traditional raids.

History & Lore

The Fall of Bozja

Bozja was once an independent city-state in Ilsabard, renowned for its mastery of magitek and martial prowess. Its heart was the formidable Bozja Citadel. Decades prior to the events of Shadowbringers, the Garlean Empire, under Emperor Solus zos Galvus, laid siege to the citadel. In a cataclysmic event known as the "Burning Sky," a failed attempt to use an Allagan lunar transmitter to contact Dalamud—a project led by Midas nan Garlond (Cid's father)—caused Dalamud to fire a devastating beam of energy, utterly destroying the citadel and slaughtering its defenders. This act of overwhelming brutality broke Bozjan resistance and led to its annexation.

The Resistance Rises

Despite decades of occupation, the flame of rebellion never fully died. Following the Garlean Empire's political instability after the death of Emperor Varis, resistance cells coalesced into a unified force under leaders like Bajsaljen. Their goal: to reclaim Bozjan soil and forge a path to liberate the occupied citadel. The Southern Front represents the first major foothold of this renewed rebellion, a region of strategic value where Imperial control is actively contested.

The Save the Queen Narrative

Adventurers are drawn into the conflict by Marsak, a survivor of the citadel's fall, who seeks to recover the legendary "Queen's Sword," a symbol of Bozja's lost monarchy. The storyline uncovers the truth behind Queen Gunnhildr, revealing her not as a historical queen but as a composite legend born from the hopes of the Bozjan people and the tragic fate of a Resonant test subject named Gunnhildr.

The narrative is deeply personal, focusing on key figures:

  • Lyon rem Helsos: A Garlean turncoat and former subordinate of Legatus Gabranth, driven by guilt and a desire for redemption.
  • Misija Votyasch: A young Bozjan woman whose family perished in the citadel's destruction, who becomes dangerously obsessed with the Gunnhildr legacy.
  • Noah van Gabranth: The ruthless Legatus of the IVth Legion, tasked with crushing the rebellion and protector of the Empire's Resonant research.

The conflict escalates as the Resistance uncovers Imperial experiments to create new Resonants, leading to a climactic assault on the Imperial stronghold, Castrum Lacus Litore, and setting the stage for the subsequent campaign in Zadnor.

Gameplay

The Bozjan Southern Front is an instanced zone supporting up to 72 players. Gameplay revolves around participating in dynamic events to increase one's "Resistance Rank," which gates access to more challenging content and rewards.

Progression & Systems

  • Resistance Rank: Earned by participating in zone events and accumulating mettle, this rank (from 1 to 15) unlocks access to new areas of the map, quests, and the ability to queue for Castrum Lacus Litore (at rank 10).
  • Skirmishes: Dynamic FATE-like events that spawn across the battlefield. These range from defeating Imperial patrols and destroying magitek armor to defending Resistance positions.
  • Critical Engagements: Instanced, storyline-driven battles for smaller groups (typically 24-48 players). These feature unique mechanics and boss fights that advance the Save the Queen plot.
  • Duels: Rare, challenging solo encounters triggered by meeting specific conditions during certain Skirmishes. Victory awards prestigious titles and achievements.

Castrum Lacus Litore

This is the zone's climax, a large-scale assault for 48 players modeled after classic FFXIV alliance raids. Players must breach the Imperial castrum's defenses, disable its central cannon, and defeat a series of powerful commanders and war machines in a multi-stage battle. Success is crucial for the storyline and yields significant progress towards Resistance Weapons.

Lost Actions

A unique system to the field operations. Players can find and use "Lost" abilities—temporary, powerful actions or role-changing spells that drop from enemies and chests. These include healing spells for DPS, tank mitigations for healers, and potent offensive skills. "Lost" fragments can also be used to augment stats. This system allows for significant flexibility and strategy in group composition for tackling the zone's challenges.

Resistance Weapons

The Bozjan Southern Front is the primary method of obtaining and upgrading the Shadowbringers relic weapons. Players collect resources from skirmishes, critical engagements, and Castrum Lacus Litore to progress through multiple stages of weapon enhancement, making sustained engagement with the zone a core activity for players seeking these best-in-class gear options.

  • The "Lost" action system is a direct callback to the "Lost" magic and abilities from Final Fantasy Tactics.

  • The visual design of the zone, with its trenches, scorched earth, and ruined fortifications, is intended to evoke the grim atmosphere of a protracted, brutal ground war.
