Overview
Hythlodaeus is an Amaurotine Ancient and one of the most perceptive souls of his age, renowned above all else for possessing the finest soul sight of his generation. Though he never claimed a seat on the Convocation of Fourteen, he served as Chief of the Bureau of the Architect and stood as the closest companion of the Convocation member known as Emet-Selch. Encountered first as a shade within a recreation of lost Amaurot and later in his living form during the events of Elpis, Hythlodaeus embodies the warmth, wit, and quiet wisdom of a civilization swallowed by catastrophe.
History & Lore
Origins and Role in Amaurot
Among the Ancients of Amaurot, the gift of soul sight was not unheard of, but Hythlodaeus possessed it to a degree that surpassed virtually all of his contemporaries, including his closest friend Hades. This rare acuity drew the attention of those who governed the city, and Hythlodaeus was approached to fill the seat of Emet-Selch on the Convocation of Fourteen. He declined, deferring instead to Hades, whose formidable command of aether manipulation and nearly comparable soul sight made him the more fitting candidate in Hythlodaeus's estimation.
Rather than a seat on the Convocation, Hythlodaeus accepted the role of Chief of the Bureau of the Architect, the body responsible for reviewing and approving new concepts for creatures and magical constructs before they could be released into the world of Etheirys. He also maintained a quiet friendship with the Ancient who held the seat of Azem, occasionally lending his aid to that wandering soul in secret. When the catastrophe known as the Final Days descended upon Etheirys, Hythlodaeus was among those who gave their lives to summon the primal Zodiark, sacrificing themselves in the hope of halting the destruction.
A Shade in the Sunken City
Long after his death, an echo of Hythlodaeus persisted within Emet-Selch's painstaking recreation of Amaurot on the First. When the Warrior of Darkness entered that illusory city and was overwhelmed by the Light stored within them, a shade bearing Hythlodaeus's likeness approached and quietly asked to sit beside them, offering a moment of calm amid the agony. This shade understood its own nature, speculating that some imperfection in its creation had granted it an unusual self-awareness.
Drawing on his soul sight even in this diminished form, the shade perceived Ardbert, the Warrior's counterpart on the First, and recognized in both figures the fragmented soul of Azem, addressing the Warrior as a new yet familiar friend before departing. Later, when the Warrior returned to Amaurot to recover the memory crystals of the Convocation, the shade of Hythlodaeus waited beside Emet-Selch's stone. He urged the Warrior to preserve those crystals and offered them Azem's memory stone, one that Emet-Selch had fashioned in secret, though Hythlodaeus himself was uncertain whether the gesture arose from his own will or from something deeper.
The Living Hythlodaeus in Elpis and Beyond
The true Hythlodaeus first appeared to the Warrior of Light among the spirits gathered on the moon, souls who had been bound to Zodiark through sacrifice. He recognized the Warrior as a reincarnation of Azem and offered his assistance in holding the other shades at bay. When Zodiark was ultimately destroyed, his soul was released back to the star.
What neither he nor Emet-Selch had ever consciously remembered was that they had already met the Warrior of Light long before, during a visit to the research preserve of Elpis. Hythlodaeus detected the Warrior's aether despite its unusual thinness and persuaded Emet-Selch to use his power to give them a physical form. Together the group investigated the overseer Hermes, encountered the being called Venat, and pursued Hermes into the facility known as Ktisis Hyperboreia, where they witnessed the creature Meteion embrace despair and declare her intent to unmake all life. Hermes then invoked the power of Kairos to rewrite the memories of everyone present. Hythlodaeus and Emet-Selch helped Venat and the Warrior escape before the alteration took hold, and though the memories were lost to him, Hythlodaeus expressed hope that they would one day be recovered. In the final confrontation at Ultima Thule, the Warrior summoned the spirits of both Hythlodaeus and Emet-Selch through Azem's crystal. Together they conjured a field of Elpis flowers, blooms that shift color in response to emotion, offering Meteion living proof that despair was not the only answer the universe held.
Personality and Character
Hythlodaeus carried himself with an easy warmth that made him approachable to nearly anyone, yet beneath that affability lay a perceptiveness that little could escape. Those who knew him well described him as incurably smug, a quality born less from arrogance than from the simple fact that his soul sight revealed truths others could not see. He was fond of teasing Emet-Selch with coy remarks, yet his affection for his friend was never in doubt, and his respect for him was genuine.
Despite holding the keener soul sight of the two, Hythlodaeus showed no resentment at stepping aside so that Emet-Selch could take the Convocation seat. He was candid about his own limitations, freely admitting that beyond his perceptive gift he possessed no particular talent for magical transformation or manipulation. He understood his purpose as one of support, believing that his role in life was to stand beside Azem and Emet-Selch rather than to seek distinction for himself. Even as a shade, fully aware of his artificial nature, he chose to engage the world with the same gentle humor and steadiness that had defined him in life.
Relationships
The bond between Hythlodaeus and Emet-Selch, known in life as Hades, was the defining relationship of his existence. Their friendship was one of equals who complemented each other, with Hythlodaeus's unmatched perception balancing Hades's extraordinary magical power. Hythlodaeus teased and challenged his friend while remaining one of the few people who truly understood him, and the depth of that connection persisted even across the vast gulf of death and memory.
His relationship with the Ancient who held the seat of Azem was quieter but no less meaningful. Hythlodaeus aided that wandering soul in secret and, upon meeting the Warrior of Light in Elpis, recognized the echo of Azem within them immediately. He greeted that recognition not with grief but with something closer to delight, treating the Warrior as a continuation of a friendship that transcended the boundaries of individual lives.
Gameplay Role
In gameplay terms, Hythlodaeus serves as a Duty Support party member for the dungeon Ktisis Hyperboreia. He is designated as a Soulseer and wields a bow, fulfilling a role functionally equivalent to the Bard job.
Name and Voice
The name Hythlodaeus is drawn from Raphael Hythlodaeus, a character in Thomas More's Utopia, with the surname carrying the Greek meaning of speaker of nonsense, a quietly ironic choice for a figure whose every perception cuts to the heart of truth.
In the English localization he is voiced by Toby Regbo, while the Japanese version features the voice of Soichiro Hoshi.
