History & Lore
Origins and the Fall of Ala Mhigo
Meffrid Noward is a Highlander Hyur who chose to leave behind his wife Geila and their daughter when Ala Mhigo fell to the Garlean Empire. Rather than accept occupation, he committed himself fully to the Ala Mhigan Resistance, taking up arms against the empire and helping to coordinate guerrilla operations from concealed outposts scattered throughout the region of Gyr Abania.
As imperial control over the city-state and its surrounding territories grew ever more suffocating, Meffrid and his followers were eventually forced to abandon their positions and seek refuge elsewhere. The retreat was grueling, and by the time his weary and hungry band reached Gridania, they were turned away — the elementals of the Black Shroud having rejected their appeal for sanctuary. Left without a home or a safe haven, Meffrid found himself tasked with keeping his people's resolve from crumbling entirely.
Encounter in the South Shroud
During the period following their expulsion from Gridania, Meffrid's situation grew more desperate when one of his companions suffered a serious wound. He appealed to the residents of Quarrymill for help, but the settlement's people, unwilling to defy the will of the elementals, refused to intervene.
It was the Warrior of Light who stepped forward to offer assistance. Working alongside Buscarron of the Stacks, they managed to prepare a traditional Ala Mhigan remedy that ultimately saved the injured man's life. Grateful for the unexpected aid, Meffrid repaid the Warrior of Light with a letter of introduction to the Ala Mhigan Resistance encamped at Little Ala Mhigo, forging a connection that would prove significant in the years ahead.
Return to Gyr Abania
Meffrid and his companions eventually found a measure of stability within Little Ala Mhigo, but he was not content to remain in safety while his homeland remained under imperial rule. Despite the considerable risks, he chose to return to Gyr Abania, where he became an integral part of Conrad's band of freedom fighters working to reclaim Ala Mhigo.
His time with the Resistance in Gyr Abania was marked by fierce dedication. He fought alongside his comrades when the Garlean prince Zenos yae Galvus led a devastating assault on Rhalgr's Reach. During that battle, Meffrid fell at the hands of Fordola rem Lupis, the ruthless commander of the imperial unit known as the Skulls.
Personality
Meffrid is a man of fierce conviction whose temper can flare when those in need are turned away without cause, as his reaction to the elementals' rejection made plain. Yet beneath that intensity lies a deeply selfless nature. He is deeply reluctant to allow others to endanger themselves on his behalf, and before departing for Gyr Abania he sent his companions from the Black Shroud away, concerned that they were fighting out of personal loyalty to him rather than out of genuine commitment to Ala Mhigo's freedom.
His willingness to sacrifice himself for others is not merely philosophical. It is said that he once led an imperial patrol on a chase spanning twenty malms, drawing their attention away long enough for his wounded comrades to make their escape. Such actions speak to a man who measures his own worth by what he can give rather than what he can keep.
Relationships
Meffrid's decision to leave his wife Geila and their daughter behind in order to join the Resistance reflects the depth of his commitment to the Ala Mhigan cause, as well as the personal sacrifices that commitment demanded. Though little is detailed about his family life, the choice to part from them underscores the weight he carries as both a fighter and a father.
His encounter with the Warrior of Light marked a turning point in his story, transforming a chance meeting in the South Shroud into a meaningful alliance. His connection to Conrad and the broader Resistance network further illustrates a man who builds bonds through shared struggle and mutual purpose rather than through ease or circumstance.
