Overview

Conrad Kemp is a Midlander Hyur and the Commander of the Ala Mhigan Resistance, operating out of Rhalgr's Reach. A man shaped by decades of hardship under Garlean occupation, he rose from a practitioner of traditional medicine to a veteran leader of his people's struggle for liberation. Though weathered by loss and sacrifice, Conrad remains a steadfast figure in the fight to reclaim Ala Mhigo, ultimately entrusting the future of the resistance to the next generation before his death.

History & Lore

Background and Early Life

Before the chaos of imperial occupation consumed his homeland, Conrad Kemp practiced traditional Gyr Abanian medicine, a discipline blending thaumaturgy with apothecary arts. He managed to avoid direct confrontation during the reign of the mad king Theodric, but the arrival of the Garlean Empire brought persecution he could not escape. Targeted for his religious beliefs, he was taken to an internment camp, where firsthand exposure to imperial cruelty hardened his resolve and ultimately drove him to join the resistance.

His choice to take up the cause came at a personal cost. The decision drove a wedge between Conrad and his wife, Grede, estranging the two. Despite this, he pressed forward, drawing inspiration from Curtis Hext, the father of Yda and Lyse, whom Conrad had known and respected as a leader during Ala Mhigo's desperate effort to repel the Garlean invasion. In time, Conrad provided shelter to Yda Hext and Papalymo Totolymo following the bloody banquet, offering them refuge at Rhalgr's Reach.

Leading the Resistance

By the time the Eorzean Alliance turned its attention toward liberating Ala Mhigo, Conrad had established himself as the commanding figure of the Ala Mhigan Resistance at Rhalgr's Reach. Following the incident at Baelsar's Wall, he and the other resistance leaders met with the Scions of the Seventh Dawn and agreed to cooperate under the Alliance's terms, though their forces remained stretched thin and in need of support.

The Fall of Rhalgr's Reach

While the Warrior of Light was away scouting Garlean-held positions in preparation for an offensive, disaster struck the camp. Zenos yae Galvus led the Crania Lupia in a devastating assault on Rhalgr's Reach, overwhelming the resistance and defeating the Scions. Conrad continued issuing orders amid the chaos until Fordola rem Lupis struck him down, leaving him gravely injured.

Recovering from his wounds, Conrad met with Raubahn Aldynn in a moment of deep despair. He confessed that the resistance had little left to give, having lost so many of their own, including their children. Raubahn's words rekindled something in him, and when Alphinaud and the Warrior of Light proposed sparking a rebellion in Doma to divide Zenos's attention, Conrad pledged that if the gambit succeeded, Ala Mhigo would fight on.

Death and Legacy

Conrad's final act came during the assault on Specula Imperatoris, where he worked to convince members of the Skulls to lay down their arms and surrender. The moment was cut short when an unexpected cannon blast from Castrum Abania struck him, inflicting a mortal wound. Lyse arrived in time to be at his side as he drew his last breaths, and with what strength remained, Conrad passed the mantle of the Ala Mhigan Resistance to her.

His death marked the end of an era for the resistance, but also a turning point. By choosing Lyse as his successor, Conrad ensured that the movement he had given his life to would continue under new and determined leadership.

Personality

Conrad carried the weight of command with a sober and measured disposition. He was acutely aware of the cost of war, and his greatest concern was always the preservation of his soldiers' lives rather than glory or personal ambition. This caution sometimes manifested as doubt, particularly in the aftermath of devastating losses, when he questioned whether Ala Mhigo had the strength to keep fighting.

Despite his moments of despair, Conrad possessed a clear-eyed sense of judgment when it came to people. He recognized Lyse Hext's potential as a leader long before circumstances demanded she step into that role, and his final decision to entrust her with the resistance reflected both his trust in her and his enduring hope for his homeland's future.

Relationships

Conrad's relationship with his wife Grede was one of the quiet casualties of his commitment to the resistance. His choice to join the fight created a rift between them that was never fully resolved. In contrast, his bond with Curtis Hext represented a source of strength and direction, as Conrad looked to the elder Hext as a model of leadership during the darkest years of the Garlean occupation.

His connection to Yda and Lyse Hext carried the weight of that history. Having sheltered Yda and Papalymo and known their father, Conrad treated Lyse with a paternal regard, ultimately seeing in her the qualities needed to carry the resistance forward after he was gone.
