Papalymo Totolymo

scionsA Realm Reborn

Overview

Papalymo Totolymo was a Lalafellin Archon from Sharlayan and a founding member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Serving as the organization's tactical and intellectual anchor during its early years, he was best known as the steadfast partner to the boisterous pugilist Yda. With a sharp, analytical mind and a mastery of destructive thaumaturgy, Papalymo provided the Scions with both formidable magical support and crucial scholarly insight. His life culminated in a heroic, self-sacrificial act at Baelsar's Wall, where he gave his life to contain the primal Shinryu, an event that profoundly altered the course of the Scions and the fate of Eorzea.

History & Lore

Early Life and Sharlayan

Hailing from the distant, knowledge-obsessed nation of Sharlayan, Papalymo was a recognized scholar who earned the title of Archon, marked by the distinctive tattoo of Thaliak on his face. Archons are among Sharlayan's most accomplished academics, and Papalymo's expertise lay in the field of thaumaturgy and arcane theory. He was a member of the Circle of Knowing, a secretive group of Sharlayan scholars led by Louisoix Leveilleur who believed in intervening in Eorzean affairs, contrary to their homeland's strict policy of non-intervention. It was through this circle that he formed a close partnership with Yda Hext.

The Scions of the Seventh Dawn

Following the death of Louisoix and the dissolution of the Circle of Knowing after the Battle of Carteneau, Papalymo helped found its successor organization: the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Based in the Waking Sands and later the Rising Stones, the Scions aimed to protect Eorzea from supernatural threats, particularly primals. Papalymo and Yda operated as a veteran two-person team, with Papalymo's cautious, strategic nature perfectly balancing Yda's impulsive energy.

Throughout the events of A Realm Reborn, Papalymo served as a senior field commander and advisor. He assisted the Warrior of Light in investigating the Ascians, tempered primal worshippers, and the Garlean threat. His dry wit and often exasperated demeanor towards his partner's antics belied a deep sense of responsibility and care for his comrades.

The Secret of Yda

A significant, hidden dimension of Papalymo's character was his guardianship of a painful secret. His partner, who presented herself as Yda Hext, was in fact Yda's younger sister, Lyse. The real Yda had perished years earlier during a failed operation for the Ala Mhigan resistance. To protect Lyse's fragile state and honor her sister's memory, Papalymo helped her maintain the deception, becoming her sole confidant and a grounding presence. He patiently guided her, knowing she needed time to grow into her own person before confronting the truth of her identity.

The Dragonsong War and Final Sacrifice

During the Heavensward expansion, Papalymo remained a key logistical and support figure for the Scions as they operated from Ishgard. His scholarly knowledge proved invaluable in understanding the history of the Dragonsong War and the nature of the Archbishop's heresy.

His defining moment came in the aftermath of the war, during the patch quests leading to Stormblood (patch 3.56). The rogue Ala Mhigan revolutionary Ilberd, alias the Griffin, performed a massive sacrifice of his own followers at Baelsar's Wall, summoning an immensely powerful and unstable primal: Shinryu. The beast threatened to unleash a second Calamity upon the realm.

With no other option to prevent immediate catastrophe, Papalymo resolved to replicate the sealing magic used by his mentor, Louisoix, during the Battle of Carteneau. Knowing the spell would consume his own aether and life force, he cast the incantation without hesitation. He successfully imprisoned Shinryu within a crystalline cocoon, stalling its rampage at the cost of his life. In his final moments, he released Lyse from her promise to keep pretending, urging her to live freely as herself. His sacrifice provided Eorzea with a critical respite and served as the catalyst that finally allowed Lyse to shed her sister's identity and emerge as a leader in her own right.

Personality & Relationships

Papalymo was the epitome of the "straight man" in his dynamic with Yda/Lyse. He was pragmatic, meticulous, and prone to sighing at displays of frivolity or impulsiveness. Beneath his sardonic exterior, however, lay a deeply loyal and compassionate heart. He was fiercely protective of his friends, especially Lyse, whom he guided with a quiet, almost paternal care. His respect for Louisoix was immense, and his final act was a direct emulation of his mentor's heroism. His relationships with other Scions, such as Y'shtola and Thancred, were marked by mutual respect and the dry banter of seasoned colleagues.

Gameplay

While not a playable character, Papalymo appears as a key NPC throughout the main scenario quests of A Realm Reborn and Heavensward. He is often involved in quests that require scholarly investigation or tactical planning. In combat-centric cutscenes, he is depicted as a powerful thaumaturge, utilizing high-level black magic such as Fire III and Blizzard III.

Trivia

  • Papalymo's Archon mark represents Thaliak, one of the Twelve, associated with knowledge and wisdom. Its relevance to his character as a scholar and mentor is a noted piece of symbolism.
  • He had a noted fondness for tea and could often be found preparing it during quieter moments at the Waking Sands.
  • His sacrifice mirrors that of Louisoix not only in the magic used but in its consequence: both gave their lives to seal away a world-ending threat born of immense sacrifice and rage (Bahamut and Shinryu, respectively).
  • The revelation that he had known Lyse's true identity all along recontextualizes many of his earlier, seemingly stern interactions with her as acts of subtle protection and guidance.
