Vrtra

Also known as: Varshahn

alliesEndwalker

Overview

Vrtra is one of the First Brood, a son of the great wyrm Midgardsormr and a sibling to figures such as Nidhogg, Hraesvelgr, and Azdaja. Rather than becoming entangled in the conflicts that defined his brothers and sisters, Vrtra carved out a quieter but no less consequential role as the hidden guardian of Thavnair and its sovereign city-state, Radz-at-Han. Operating through a constructed mortal vessel known as Varshahn, he has guided and protected the island's people across centuries, bearing the weight of immortality and loss in near-total secrecy.

History & Lore

Origins and Lineage

Vrtra was born of Midgardsormr, the great wyrm whose children collectively became known as the First Brood. This lineage placed him among some of the most powerful and storied dragons in the world, siblings whose fates would become woven into the histories of entire nations. Where Nidhogg's grief ignited a thousand-year war and Hraesvelgr retreated into sorrow and isolation, Vrtra's path diverged toward stewardship rather than conflict.

Among his closest kin was Azdaja, an elder sibling whose fate would come to weigh heavily upon him. The bonds forged within the First Brood were not merely familial in the mortal sense but carried the deep, enduring resonance unique to dragonkind, making loss all the more profound across the vast stretches of time they were destined to inhabit.

Guardian of Thavnair

Rather than revealing himself openly, Vrtra chose to protect the people of Thavnair from the shadows. He established himself as the true power behind the seat of the Satrap of Radz-at-Han, the island nation's ruling authority, guiding its governance and shielding its inhabitants from threats that might otherwise have gone unchecked. This arrangement allowed him to act with purpose while avoiding the fear and upheaval that the sudden revelation of a living dragon sovereign might provoke.

To walk among mortals without suspicion, Vrtra created an artificial construct body and gave it the name Varshahn. Through this vessel he could attend councils, speak with diplomats, and engage directly with the people he had sworn to protect. The construct served as both a practical tool and a kind of mask, separating the ancient dragon from the fragile, mortal world he had chosen to serve.

The Burden of Immortality

Centuries of guardianship brought Vrtra into close contact with generations of mortals, each of whom aged and perished while he endured. This cycle of connection and loss shaped him profoundly, instilling a quiet grief that ran beneath his composed exterior. Unlike some of his siblings who responded to such pain with rage or withdrawal, Vrtra channeled it into continued dedication, finding meaning in the ongoing act of protection even as those he protected slipped away.

His long vigil also meant carrying secrets that could not be shared lightly. The true nature of Radz-at-Han's guiding hand remained hidden from most of its citizens, a necessary deception that nonetheless added another layer of solitude to an existence already defined by distance from others.

Personality

Vrtra presents himself through Varshahn with measured calm and careful deliberation, qualities befitting a ruler who has observed the rise and fall of countless human endeavors. He is not cold, however. Beneath his composed manner lies a genuine care for the people of Thavnair and a deep capacity for grief, particularly where his lost sibling Azdaja is concerned.

His choice to rule in secret rather than assert dominance openly speaks to a humility unusual among beings of his power and age. He does not seek reverence or fear, only the quiet assurance that those under his watch are safe. This disposition makes him a figure of understated dignity, one whose strength is expressed through patience and sacrifice rather than displays of draconic might.

Relationships

The bond between Vrtra and his elder sibling Azdaja stands as one of the most defining relationships in his long life. Her fate became a source of enduring sorrow, a wound that centuries could not fully close. This grief informed much of his outlook and lent urgency to his protective instincts, as though safeguarding Thavnair were in some measure an act of devotion to those he could no longer reach.

His connection to Midgardsormr, like that of all the First Brood, formed the foundation of his identity. Though the great wyrm's direct presence receded over time, the values and legacy of that lineage continued to shape how Vrtra understood his place in the world and his responsibilities toward those weaker than himself.

Role in Endwalker

Vrtra's story came to the foreground during the events of Endwalker, when the Warrior of Light's journey brought them to Thavnair and into contact with the enigmatic Varshahn. The unfolding crisis gradually stripped away the layers of secrecy surrounding Radz-at-Han's true protector, forcing Vrtra into a more open role and confronting him with challenges that his centuries of quiet guardianship had not fully prepared him to face alone.

The arc explored through his character touched on themes of hidden sacrifice, the loneliness of immortal beings who love mortals, and the question of whether concealment, however well-intentioned, can truly serve those it is meant to protect. His journey during this period marked a significant moment of reckoning for a dragon who had long defined himself by what he kept hidden.
