Overview

Radz-at-Han is the vibrant capital city of the island nation of Thavnair, a jewel of the southern seas renowned across Etheirys for its mastery of alchemy and its status as a thriving, peaceful mercantile hub. Serving as a primary city-state for adventurers during the Endwalker expansion, Radz-at-Han is characterized by its breathtaking architecture—a fusion of domed towers, ornate latticework, and vibrant colors—and its lush, tropical gardens. Beneath its prosperous and tranquil exterior lies a profound secret: for centuries, it has been secretly guided and protected by the great wyrm Vrtra, a dragon of the First Brood, whose stewardship has shaped its unique destiny.

History & Lore

Founding and Early Prosperity

Thavnair's history is deeply intertwined with alchemy, a discipline that flourished on the island due to its abundant natural resources and unique aetheric currents. Radz-at-Han grew from a collection of coastal settlements into a wealthy city-state, its fortunes built on the export of alchemical goods, rare spices, textiles, and the famous "alchemy-grade aether." This is a community observation and has not been officially confirmed by Square Enix. This substance, crucial for a wide array of magical and industrial applications, became the cornerstone of Thavnairian trade, making Radz-at-Han a cosmopolitan crossroads where cultures and currencies from across the Three Great Continents mingled.

For generations, the city was ruled by a figure known as the Satrap, a monarch whose identity was always closely guarded within the walls of the imposing palace, the Palaka's Stand. The citizenry enjoyed unparalleled peace and prosperity, unaware that their true ruler was not a mortal man.

The Secret of the Satrap

The true Satrap is Vrtra, one of the seven First Brood of Midgardsormr. After the tragic loss of his sister, Azdaja, to the void-torn Thirteenth shard, Vrtra sought a new purpose. He turned his back on the traditional draconic conflicts of Meracydia and the north, journeying to Thavnair. Finding a people whose culture valued creation and harmony over conquest, Vrtra chose to protect them.

To walk among mortals, Vrtra employed ancient Allagan technology to create a sophisticated, aetherically-infused simulacrum—a humanoid form named Varshahn. Through Varshahn, Vrtra has governed Radz-at-Han for centuries, his draconic wisdom fostering an era of stability and innovation. The city's elite, including the formidable Radiant Host guard, are aware of the truth, forming a compact of silence to protect their benevolent sovereign's secret.

The Final Days and Revelation

Radz-at-Han's peace was shattered when the apocalyptic phenomenon known as the Final Days first manifested on Etheirys not in Garlemald or Eorzea, but on the streets of Thavnair. Citizens, overcome by despair, were transformed into monstrous blasphemies, plunging the city into chaos and horror.

In this crisis, Vrtra could no longer remain hidden. He revealed his true nature to the Warrior of Light and their allies, unleashing his full draconic might to defend his people. This revelation marked a turning point, not just for the city, but for the world's understanding of the bond between dragon and man. Radz-at-Han became a crucial bastion in the fight against the Endsinger, with its alchemists, led by the brilliant Nidhana, working tirelessly to develop aetherial remedies and the city serving as a strategic base for operations into the void-torn ruins of the Alzadaal Legacy and beyond.

Culture and Society

Radz-at-Han is a sensory delight. The air is perfumed with exotic spices from the Great Bazaar, where merchants hawk silks, jewels, and alchemical curios. The architecture is open and airy, designed to accommodate the tropical climate, with flowing water features and abundant greenery. Culturally, Thavnairians are known for their artistic flair, vibrant music and dance, and a pragmatic, welcoming attitude toward outsiders—provided they come to trade, not conquer.

The society is matriarchal in many respects, with women often holding prominent roles in commerce, alchemy, and the military (the Radiant Host). The Matanga, an elephantine race, are among the peoples living on Thavnair and play a role in the island's diverse culture. The city's greatest pride is its alchemical tradition, a non-elemental discipline viewed as a science of transformation and creation, perfectly mirroring Vrtra's own hope for a world that builds rather than destroys.

Gameplay

As a major hub city in Endwalker, Radz-at-Han provides adventurers with all essential amenities:

  • Aetheryte Plaza: A central teleportation point.
  • Market Boards & Retainer Bells: For trading and retainer access.
  • Crafting & Gathering Guilds: Featuring suppliers and quests for the new Disciple of the Hand and Land classes.
  • Inn Room: Available at the Meghaduta guest house.
  • Key NPCs: Quest-givers for main scenario, side quests, and optional content like the "Tataru's Grand Endeavor" questline are found throughout the city.
  • Transportation: Acts as the gateway to the Thavnair field zone and connects to other major locations via the Endwalker story.

The city's layout is tiered, with the bustling markets and residential areas in the lower sections, and the majestic Palaka's Stand overlooking all. The atmosphere shifts dramatically during the Final Days story segments, with areas becoming battle zones before being restored to peace.
