Alzadaal's Legacy

Endwalker

Overview

Alzadaal's Legacy is a level 90 dungeon introduced in Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker as part of the post-main scenario content in Patch 6.1, "Newfound Adventure." It is a sprawling, submerged treasure vault located beneath the waves off the coast of Thavnair, representing the pinnacle of the legendary merchant-king Alzadaal's wealth and ingenuity. Designed as an impregnable fortress to safeguard his fortune, the Legacy now lies silent and waterlogged, its automated defenses still active against any who would dare plunder its riches. The dungeon serves as a classic adventure-style delve, shifting the narrative tone from the cosmic stakes of the Endwalker saga to a more localized tale of exploration, history, and the allure of hidden treasure.

History & Lore

The Legend of Alzadaal

Alzadaal is a near-mythical figure in Near Eastern history, renowned as a merchant-king whose wealth and influence were said to be unparalleled. His name is synonymous with opulence, shrewd trade, and grand architectural works. According to Thavnairian tradition, fearing that his vast fortune would be squandered or stolen after his death, Alzadaal commissioned the construction of an ultimate treasury. This vault was to be hidden from the world, accessible only to those he deemed worthy or cunning enough to bypass its protections. The location chosen was a secret, and the methods of its construction became the stuff of legend.

A Sunken Fortress

Over centuries, the precise location of Alzadaal's Legacy was lost to history, fading into rumor and folktale. It was ultimately rediscovered not on land, but beneath the sea. Geological shifts or perhaps deliberate magical concealment caused the entire structure to sink below the waves, where it remained hidden for ages. The saltwater failed to corrode its magically reinforced, gilded architecture, but it did flood its chambers, creating a unique aquatic environment within a palace of gold. The vault's sophisticated guardian automata and trap systems, powered by ancient aetheric engines, continued to function autonomously, maintaining a silent vigil over the king's hoard. Over time, oceanic creatures also found their way inside, making the vault their home and adding a layer of natural danger to its artificial defenses.

Rediscovery and Exploration

The dungeon's story is set in motion following the events of Endwalker. With the immediate threat to the star ended, adventurers and treasure hunters turn their attention back to the mysteries of Etheirys. The allure of Alzadaal's lost fortune proves irresistible, and rumors of its submerged location begin to circulate. The Warrior of Light is drawn into this treasure hunt, either by scholarly curiosity, a patron's request, or the simple promise of adventure. Venturing into the sunken halls, they must navigate the perilous, water-filled corridors, overcome the ancient security measures, and confront the creatures that now dwell within, all to uncover the truth—and the treasure—of Alzadaal's Legacy.

Gameplay

Alzadaal's Legacy is a four-player dungeon designed for a party of one tank, one healer, and two DPS. The dungeon is linear, guiding players through a series of opulent, submerged chambers while engaging groups of enemies and three major boss encounters.

Environment & Traversal

The dungeon's aesthetic is a blend of grand, Near Eastern-inspired architecture and deep-sea immersion. Players navigate through gilded archways, treasure-stuffed antechambers, and ornate halls, all partially flooded with seawater. Coral growth and marine life adorn the structures, creating a visually striking contrast between decadent artifice and natural aquatic encroachment. The path is straightforward but punctuated with packs of enemies consisting of autonomous defense units (like the Alzadaal's Custodian and Alzadaal's Defender) and hostile sea creatures that have infiltrated the vault.

Boss Encounters

  1. Armored Chariot: The first guardian is a massive, self-propelled siege engine that patrols a large vault chamber. This fight emphasizes area denial and movement. The Chariot uses sweeping physical attacks and deploys hazards such as rolling mines and targeted cannon barrages. Players must avoid its charge attacks and manage adds that spawn to repair the machine.

  2. Kapikulu: The second boss is a powerful, ornate automaton modeled after Thavnairian royal guards. Kapikulu employs a variety of magical and mechanical attacks. The encounter tests party coordination with mechanics involving shared damage ("Crimson Flame"), proximity-based explosions ("Blazing Angon"), and the management of "Royal Guard" adds that empower the boss if not defeated quickly.

  3. Nald'thal: The final guardian is a towering, dual-faced statue animated by a powerful aetheric core and imbued with the iconography of the Ul'dahn deity of commerce and the underworld—a fitting guardian for a treasure vault. This two-phase fight is the dungeon's climax. The boss alternates between its two aspects:

    • Nald Aspect: Focuses on fiery, wide-area attacks and stack markers.
    • Thal Aspect: Focuses on dark, void-tinged attacks and spread markers. The core mechanic involves the boss summoning scales that must be balanced by having players stand on them to manage a "Debt" debuff. Failing to balance the scales results in heavy raid-wide damage. The fight requires constant awareness, timely movement, and effective role-based coordination to survive its dual-natured assault.

Rewards

Upon defeating Nald'thal, players can loot a treasure coffer containing gear from the "Alzadaal's Legacy" set, which continues the dungeon's theme of Thavnairian opulence with aquatic motifs. The dungeon also yields Tomestones of Astronomy and Poetics, and is part of the Expert Roulette rotation for level 90 players.

Trivia

  • The name "Nald'thal" for the final boss is a direct reference to the twin deity worshipped in Ul'dah, representing the duality of commerce (Nald) and the underworld (Thal). This cleverly ties the theme of treasure and final resting places to a known Eorzean god.
  • The dungeon's aesthetic, while unique, shares thematic elements with other "treasure vault" dungeons in FFXIV, such as The Lost City of Amdapor and The Temple of the Fist, but distinguishes itself with its fully submerged setting and Near Eastern design.
  • Alzadaal's Legacy is one of the first major pieces of content to expand on Thavnair's history and culture outside of the Endwalker main scenario, providing valuable worldbuilding for the region.
  • The dungeon's storyline exemplifies the "Newfound Adventure" theme of Patch 6.1, focusing on smaller-scale, classic Final Fantasy adventures after saving the universe.
