Overview
The Gunbreaker is a tank job in Final Fantasy XIV that wields the iconic gunblade, a hybrid weapon combining a finely balanced sword with an integrated firing mechanism in its hilt. Introduced in the Shadowbringers expansion, it is the first and only job to begin at level 60, requiring no base class. Embodying an aggressive, high-tempo style of protection, the Gunbreaker’s philosophy is rooted in personal guardianship. Its combat style is a dynamic fusion of elegant swordsmanship and explosive, cartridge-enhanced techniques, making it the most offensively oriented tank, designed to defend others through relentless, precise assault.
History & Lore
The art of the Gunbreaker originates from the Hrothgar of Bozja, a nation on the southern continent of Ilsabard. The gunblade itself is a testament to Bozjan ingenuity—not a firearm that shoots bullets, but a blade that uses a controlled detonation of aetherically charged cartridges at the moment of impact to devastate an opponent’s guard and internal organs. This technique turns every slash and thrust into a concussive, armor-piercing attack.
Historically, Gunbreakers were elite bodyguards, their entire martial discipline built around the singular concept of shielding a specific person, known as their "charge." This duty went beyond mere combat; it was a profound oath of devotion. A Gunbreaker would study their charge’s habits, personality, and vulnerabilities to anticipate any threat, becoming an unbreakable shield through intimate understanding and unwavering focus. This tradition made them legendary protectors within Bozjan society.
The fall of Bozja to the Garlean Empire scattered its people and nearly erased the Gunbreaker tradition. The knowledge survived in fragments, preserved by Hrothgar descendants and a few dedicated outsiders. In the Shadowbringers narrative, the Scion Thancred Waters—seeking a new way to protect the young Oracle of Light, Ryne—rediscovered and mastered this lost art. Having lost the ability to manipulate aether, Thancred found in the gunblade’s mechanically-assisted techniques a perfect tool for his renewed vow as a guardian. Through him, the legacy of the Bozjan protectors was reborn on the First Reflection, embodying the job’s core theme: the strength found in fighting for someone else.
Gameplay
The Gunbreaker delivers a fast-paced, combo-driven tanking experience that emphasizes offensive momentum and proactive defense.
Playstyle Identity
Gunbreakers maintain high damage output through a rapid, flowing rotation of sword strikes and cartridge-powered explosions. Their playstyle is often described as resembling a Damage Dealer (DPS) in tempo and complexity, while retaining all the durability and defensive responsibility of a tank. Managing resources to unleash powerful attacks while mitigating incoming damage is central to the role.
Core Mechanics
- The Gunblade: The weapon’s firing mechanism is triggered to enhance melee attacks, not for ranged combat. Successful weapon skill combos generate cartridges.
- Powder Gauge & Cartridges: This job gauge holds up to two cartridges. These are spent to execute powerful "Cartridge" abilities like Gnashing Fang and Double Down.
- Continuation: A defining mechanic, Continuation is an ability used immediately after certain Cartridge skills (like Gnashing Fang or Double Down) to trigger a rapid follow-up attack from the gunblade’s chamber, creating a satisfying and high-damage sequence.
- Solid Barrel Combo: The primary three-step combo that generates cartridges and builds the Sonic Break Damage-over-Time effect.
- No Mercy: The primary damage-increasing cooldown, aligning burst phases with powerful Cartridge combos.
Defensive Kit
True to its bodyguard lore, the Gunbreaker possesses a robust suite of defensive tools centered on personal and party-wide protection:
- Heart of Stone/Corundum: A short-cooldown ability that significantly reduces damage taken by the Gunbreaker or a targeted ally, reflecting the job’s protective oath.
- Camouflage: Increases parry rate and reduces damage taken, representing a defensive stance.
- Nebula & Rampart: Standard tank cooldowns for heavy damage reduction.
- Superbolide: The signature invulnerability skill. The Gunbreaker reduces their own HP to 1 while becoming impervious to damage for 8 seconds—a dramatic "last stand" ability that requires careful coordination with healers.
- Heart of Light: A party-wide magic damage reduction shield.
- Aurora: A regenerative heal-over-time effect that can be applied to self or an ally.
Job Gauge & Rotation
The Gunbreaker’s rotation is built around a 60-second cycle, anchored by the No Mercy burst window. Players weave Gnashing Fang and its Continuation follow-ups into their Solid Barrel combo, using cartridges as they are generated. The goal is to ensure maximum cartridge spending under No Mercy, culminating in the high-potency Double Down skill. This creates a rhythmic, engaging gameplay loop of build-up and explosive release.
Trivia
- The Gunbreaker’s weapon, the gunblade, is a direct homage to Squall Leonhart’s weapon from Final Fantasy VIII. The sound effect for triggering the firing mechanism is famously the same "blade click" sound from that game.
- Thancred is the first and primary Gunbreaker depicted in the MSQ, and his adoption of the job symbolizes his character arc from a carefree spy to a dedicated father-figure for Ryne.
- While the job originates from Bozjan Hrothgar, player characters learn the basics from a Hrothgar NPC named Radovan in Gridania, who is himself a refugee from the occupied south.
- The Gunbreaker’s artifact armor sets are named after famous diamonds (e.g., Deepshadow, Law’s Order), reinforcing the "unbreakable protector" aesthetic.
- In early job development, the team considered having the gunblade function as an actual ranged weapon but settled on the melee-enhanced style to better fit the tank role and its unique fantasy.
