Ryne Waters

Also known as: Ryne, Oracle of Light, Minfilia

scionsShadowbringers

Overview

Ryne Waters is a character in Final Fantasy XIV, introduced during the Shadowbringers expansion. A young Hyur Midlander woman living on the First, she is the latest reincarnation of Minfilia, the beloved leader of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Raised without knowledge of her birth name and trained under the ruthless Ran'jit, Ryne eventually forges her own identity as the Oracle of Light. Her journey takes her from a life of uncertainty and borrowed purpose to one defined by her own resolve, compassion, and growing bonds with those around her.

History & Lore

Origins and Early Life

Ryne was born on the First roughly a decade before the Warrior of Light was summoned from the Source. As the most recent reincarnation of Minfilia, she carried within her the latent power of the Oracle of Light, though she had no memory of her birth name or the lineage she embodied. At a young age she was brought to Eulmore, where the general Ran'jit took charge of her upbringing and trained her in the traditions of her predecessors.

Her life changed when Thancred Waters arrived on the First following his own displacement from the Source. He rescued her from Eulmore's grasp and took her on as an apprentice, the two of them traveling together while hunting sin eaters. During this period, the original Minfilia briefly inhabited the girl's body to communicate her intention to fade away and pass her power on, a revelation that complicated Thancred's ability to connect with the young woman who was not quite the person he had lost.

Becoming Ryne

When the Scions of the Seventh Dawn united to pursue the remaining Lightwardens, the girl chose to awaken the full extent of her power as the Oracle of Light, fully aware that doing so might mean either she or the Minfilia within her would cease to exist. Confronting Ran'jit proved to be a turning point, as standing against her former guardian gave her the resolve to chart her own course rather than live in the shadow of a predecessor.

Minfilia accepted her reincarnation's answer, and the transformation was visible: the girl's blonde hair and glowing blue eyes gave way to red hair and natural blue eyes. On Thancred's suggestion, she took a new name to mark the beginning of her independent life. She chose Ryne, a word that Urianger later noted means 'blessing' in the fae tongue. Her shared surname with Thancred reflects his informal adoption of her as a daughter.

The Empty and Eden

Following the defeat of Emet-Selch, Ryne sensed a strange light emanating from the desolate region known as the Empty. Investigating alongside Thancred, they discovered Eden, the original sin eater responsible for the Flood of Light. Ryne used her abilities as the Oracle of Light to reactivate Eden and bring it under her control, intending to harness its vast reserves of aether to gradually restore life to the barren landscape.

Eden's awakening drew the attention of Gaia, a young woman acting under the influence of a voidsent, who attacked and eventually fell unconscious after her confrontation with the Warrior. As Gaia joined the group in hopes of recovering her lost memories, Ryne made earnest efforts to befriend her despite Gaia's initial coldness. Their bond deepened when Ryne revived Gaia from a dangerous sleep, and the friendship they built proved strong enough to help Gaia resist the machinations of the voidsent Mitron.

The Final Days and Beyond

After the Scions returned to the Source, Ryne continued her work restoring the Empty, even taking up the study of botany to determine which plants might take root in the recovering land. Her peace was disturbed by a troubling vision of a burning sky filled with falling meteorites. When the Warrior of Darkness returned to the First, Ryne shared what she had seen, and together they recognized it as a sign that the Final Days threatened the First just as they did the Source.

Ryne's voice was among those that reached the Warrior during their darkest moment in Ultima Thule, her words of encouragement helping to carry them forward. Later, when the Warrior arrived with Zero, a refugee from the Thirteenth, Ryne welcomed the newcomer warmly and guided her through the Crystarium. She also helped navigate the concerns of the First's people regarding the use of Light, suggesting visits to communities that had suffered under the Flood so that their fears could be heard and addressed.

Personality

Ryne shares the warmth and empathy that defined Minfilia before her, with a genuine desire to help those around her and protect those she still can. In her younger years she was shy and prone to self-doubt, leaning on others for reassurance and quietly worrying about her own worth. Witnessing the determination of the Warrior of Darkness and the Scions helped kindle a stronger sense of purpose within her, ultimately giving her the courage to defy Ran'jit and claim her own future.

Her relationship with Thancred is layered with complexity. Aware that she is not the Minfilia he mourned, Ryne long believed he resented her, as he kept her at arm's length even while fulfilling his promise to protect her. His eventual apology, prompted by her show of resolve, marked a turning point, and the two have since developed a genuine bond akin to that of a father and daughter. Her friendship with Gaia followed a similarly difficult path, blossoming from Gaia's initial hostility into a connection strong enough to anchor them both through extraordinary trials.

Role in Combat

Ryne can accompany the player through certain duties via the Trust system, where she functions under the Oracle of Light job classification with a fighting style resembling that of a Rogue. Her abilities are adapted to suit her role as a support combatant, including a version of Trick Attack that does not require positional setup and always applies a vulnerability debuff to enemies. She also has access to Banish III in place of Suiton, allowing her to set up that ability without needing to use Hide first.

Ryne also appears as a boss encounter in Eden's Verse: Refulgence, where she takes on the form of Shiva. In the Savage version of that fight she gains an additional form drawing on the power of Hraesvelgr. She returns as a major antagonist in Futures Rewritten, an Ultimate-tier raid introduced in Dawntrail, where she appears as the Usurper of Frost across multiple phases before ultimately merging with the Oracle of Darkness to form the raid's final boss, Pandora.
