Overview
Urianger Augurelt is an Archon of Sharlayan and a core member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Renowned for his profound erudition, mastery of prophecy and ancient languages, and his unique, archaic manner of speech, Urianger serves as the organization's chief scholar and strategist. His journey is defined by a profound intellect matched by a tragic flaw: a self-sacrificing tendency to bear terrible secrets alone, believing it will protect his friends. Over the course of the Hydaelyn–Zodiark saga, Urianger evolves from a reclusive researcher into a trusted and open confidant, learning that true strength lies not in solitary burden, but in shared trust and purpose.
History & Lore
Early Life and the Circle of Knowing
Born in Sharlayan, Urianger was a gifted student who fell under the tutelage of the great Archon Louisoix Leveilleur. He became a member of Louisoix's secretive order, the Circle of Knowing, alongside fellow students like Thancred and Y'shtola. His studies focused intensely on prophecy, aetherial theory, and the history of primals and Ascians—fields considered obscure even in Sharlayan. This specialization, combined with a natural inclination toward solitude, set him apart. His speech, patterned after the archaic texts he studied, became a permanent and distinctive trait.
A pivotal relationship from this time was with Moenbryda, a fellow Sharlayan scholar whose bold and forthright nature contrasted sharply with his own reticence. Though their bond was deep, Urianger's inability to express his feelings left their connection unresolved when she departed for Eorzea.
A Realm Reborn and the Weight of Loss
Following the Calamity and the dissolution of the Circle of Knowing, Urianger helped found the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. During the early days in the Waking Sands, he operated primarily as a researcher, deciphering ancient Allagan tomestones and providing critical intelligence on primal threats. He was often the voice explaining the metaphysical dangers of Tempering and the Ascian threat.
Moenbryda's arrival in Eorzea rekindled their bond, but her life was tragically cut short during the confrontation with the Ascian Nabriales. She sacrificed herself using experimental "White Auracite" to defeat him. Her death devastated Urianger, cementing a core belief that those who act boldly for others are doomed to perish, and that those who remain—like himself—must carry the resulting burdens and secrets.
Heavensward: The Apparent Betrayal
In the aftermath of the Dragonsong War, Urianger's behavior grew increasingly secretive. He was discovered in clandestine communication with the Warriors of Darkness, a group from the doomed reflection known as the First, and was seen treating with the Ascian Elidibus. To his comrades, this was an unambiguous betrayal, leading to his effective exile from the Scions.
The truth, revealed only later, was that Urianger had learned of the impending annihilation of the First by a Flood of Light. He acted as a double agent, feigning allegiance to Elidibus to gather information and buy time. His goal was to manipulate events so that the Warrior of Light could travel to the First and prevent its destruction, thereby saving both worlds. He willingly accepted the hatred and suspicion of his closest friends, believing this solitary, morally grey path was the only way to achieve a greater good.
Shadowbringers: Secrets in the First
Urianger was among the Scions whose soul was summoned to the First by the Crystal Exarch. He arrived in the region of Il Mheg, the fairy kingdom, where he found refuge among the mischievous pixies and the scholarly Nu Mou. His deep knowledge of prophecy and aether made him instrumental in understanding the Flood of Light, the Sin Eaters, and the nature of the Lightwardens.
Once again, however, he chose to bear a catastrophic secret alone. He had deduced that the Exarch's plan to defeat the Lightwardens would ultimately require the Warrior of Light to sacrifice their life by absorbing all the Light-aspected aether. Urianger concealed this knowledge, believing it was his role to shoulder the despair of this outcome. This deception was uncovered, leading to a fierce confrontation with Thancred, who challenged Urianger's pathological self-sacrifice and demanded he learn to trust and rely on his allies. This confrontation marked a turning point in Urianger's personal growth.
Endwalker: The Scholar Unbound
In the final saga, Urianger's evolution is clear. Facing the existential threat of the Final Days, he operates with newfound openness, sharing his insights and fears freely with the Scions. His astrological expertise is crucial in deciphering the celestial phenomena heralding the apocalypse and in uncovering the history of Meteion and the Endsinger.
His personal journey culminates in Thavnair. There, he comforts the grieving Matsya, finding the words that had always eluded him and finally making peace with the memory of Moenbryda. He fights openly on the front lines, his astrologian's magick shielding and empowering his allies—a physical manifestation of his new role as a supportive pillar of the group, rather than a solitary schemer. By the saga's end, Urianger has fully integrated his formidable intellect with a trusting heart, becoming a truly unified member of the Scion family.
Personality and Traits
Urianger is defined by his immense intellect, deep compassion, and a tragic, self-imposed martyr complex. For most of his life, he believed that love and connection inevitably led to loss, and that the duty of the survivor was to carry necessary sins in silence. This made him seem aloof, inscrutable, and frustratingly circumspect to his companions.
His elaborate, Elizabethan-style speech is both a shield and a reflection of his mind. It allows him to maintain distance and convey complex ideas with precision, but it often obscures his genuine emotions. Beneath the archaic prose lies a man of profound loyalty and empathy, who feels the weight of the world acutely.
His character arc is one of learning to communicate not just knowledge, but his own heart. He moves from being a keeper of secrets to a sharer of burdens, understanding that trust is the foundation of true strength. His relationships—with the lost Moenbryda, the challenging Thancred, and the steadfast Warrior of Light—are the catalysts for this hard-won transformation.
Gameplay
While not a playable companion in duties until later expansions, Urianger frequently appears in the main scenario as a quest giver and pivotal narrative figure. As a non-player character Astrologian, he wields an armillary sphere (an astrolabe) to cast his magicks.
