Overview

Il Mheg is the fairy kingdom of Norvrandt on the First, a realm of breathtaking beauty, profound magic, and capricious danger. Following the Flood of Light, this region was transformed by its fae inhabitants into a landscape of impossible whimsy, where vibrant, oversized flora dot the hills, crystalline waters flow through luminous ruins, and entire landmasses float in defiance of gravity. Beneath its picturesque and playful exterior, however, lies the inherent unpredictability and often cruel humor of the fae folk, making Il Mheg a place where wonder and peril are inextricably intertwined.

History and Lore

The Land Before the Fae

Prior to the Flood of Light, the region that would become Il Mheg was home to ordinary mortal settlements, not unlike those found in the other nations of Norvrandt. Its inhabitants lived under the night sky, their lives untouched by the overwhelming enchantments that would later define the area.

This changed with the advent of the Flood. As the wave of stagnant Light consumed vast swathes of the First, the mortal residents of Il Mheg were forced to flee or face annihilation. The land was left empty, a blank canvas awaiting new occupants.

The Fae Reclamation

In the void left by mortals, the indigenous fae folk—primarily the pixies, but also the aquatic fuath and the scholarly Nu Mou—emerged and claimed the territory as their own. Unleashing their innate and formidable magicks, they reshaped the very land to suit their sensibilities. Geography and architecture were warped into playful, illogical forms: mushrooms grew to the size of houses, buildings were constructed in precarious, gravity-defying stacks, and waterfalls flowed upward. The region was renamed Il Mheg, becoming a sovereign fae kingdom sealed away from the outside world by powerful glamours and the fearsome reputation of its inhabitants.

The Reign of Titania

At the heart of this new kingdom lay Lyhe Ghiah, a magnificent castle that became the seat of the fairy monarch. The ruler of the pixies, known as the King of the Fairies, traditionally bears the name and mantle of Titania. This Titania, like all before, was meant to be a benevolent protector of the fae's playful chaos.

Tragedy struck when the Lightwarden of Il Mheg, a creature of pure, destructive Light born from the Flood, perished. Its immense aether was absorbed by the nearest powerful being: Titania. The fairy king was corrupted, transformed into a new, monstrous Lightwarden. Under this corrupted Titania's influence, the kingdom of Il Mheg was cast into an eternal, searing daylight. The fae, creatures of twilight and mischief, were distressed by this unchanging glare, yet their deep-seated love and loyalty for their monarch prevented them from acting against "their beloved king."

The Warrior of Darkness and the Return of Night

The stalemate was broken with the arrival of the Warrior of Darkness and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. To continue their mission of restoring night to Norvrandt, the Lightwarden of Il Mheg had to be slain. The Warrior, aided by the pixies' own mischievous guidance, navigated the kingdom's illusions and dangers to reach Lyhe Ghiah.

Within a majestic fairy ring deep in the forest, the Warrior confronted the corrupted Titania in a battle known as The Dancing Plague. Upon Titania's defeat, the immense Light aether was safely contained by the Warrior, and for the first time in a century, true night fell over Il Mheg. The pixies' reaction was complex—a mixture of gratitude for the restored twilight and genuine, poignant grief for the loss of their king, showcasing a depth of emotion often masked by their trickster nature.

A Scholarly Refuge

Following the restoration, Il Mheg became a temporary home for Urianger Auguret. The Elezen scholar took up residence at the Bookman's Shelves, living among the Nu Mou to study the intricacies of the Flood of Light and the nature of the First. His stay provided insight into the society of the reclusive, knowledge-obsessed Nu Mou, while his constant, exasperated interactions with the pixies—who adored him as a fascinating new plaything—offered a lighter counterpoint to the zone's weightier lore.

Trivia

  • The name "Il Mheg" is likely derived from or inspired by the Welsh word "Mêl," meaning honey, reflecting the zone's sweet yet perilous nature.
  • The design and society of the pixies draw heavily from Celtic and British folklore, where fairies are often portrayed as powerful, amoral, and easily offended beings living in a parallel, enchanted world.
  • The restoration of night in Il Mheg is marked by a permanent change in the zone's skybox and ambient lighting, one of the most dramatic and lasting world-state changes in Shadowbringers.
  • The fuath, with their obsession with drowning victims and their connection to water, are inspired by malevolent water spirits from Scottish mythology.
