Coerthas Western Highlands

zonesHeavensward

Overview

The Coerthas Western Highlands is a vast, frozen expanse forming the northernmost reaches of Ishgardian territory, introduced as a major explorable zone in the Heavensward expansion. A land of stark, brutal beauty, it is characterized by its snow-swept mountains, treacherous glaciers, and valleys scarred by a millennium of relentless warfare. More than just a geographical location, the Western Highlands serve as the visceral, unforgiving front line of the Dragonsong War, where the ideological conflict between man and dragon is fought with steel, fire, and blood. The zone stands in grim contrast to the more temperate (if still chilly) Coerthas Central Highlands, representing the deeper, more hostile wilds where Ishgard's control is perpetually contested.

History & Lore

A Land Frozen in Conflict

Following the Calamity of Bahamut, the once-verdant hills and forests of Coerthas were plunged into a perpetual, magically-induced winter. The Western Highlands, lying at a higher altitude, suffered this transformation most severely. What was once a region of alpine meadows and flowing rivers became a frozen wasteland, its geography reshaped by ice and howling winds. This environmental catastrophe compounded the existing strife, as the territorial war between Ishgard and the Dravanian Horde continued unabated across the newly glacial landscape.

The zone is a sprawling graveyard of the Dragonsong War. Its history is not recorded in tomes but etched into the very terrain: the shattered remains of knightly outposts, the colossal bones of dragons half-buried in snow and ice (most notably in the area known as the Bed of Bones), and the ever-present wreckage of Heavens' Ward airships. Every ridge and canyon has been a battleground, contested for generations in a cycle of attack and retaliation that has left the land spiritually and physically barren.

Falcon's Nest and House Dzemael

The primary bastion of civilization in this desolate region is Falcon's Nest, a heavily fortified settlement clinging to the western cliffs. It serves as the stronghold and administrative center for House Dzemael, one of Ishgard's four High Houses, which holds dominion over the Western Highlands. The settlement is less a town and more a military garrison, its architecture dominated by watchtowers, barracks, and thick defensive walls designed to withstand dragonfire and siege.

Life in Falcon's Nest is defined by austerity and vigilance. Its soldiers, often drawn from the lower-born citizens of Ishgard, endure grueling patrols in the deadly cold, constantly watching the skies for dragon attacks. The settlement is a crucial logistical hub, coordinating supply lines to outlying watchtowers and launching operations into the adjacent territories of the Dravanian Forelands and the Sea of Clouds. The leadership of House Dzemael, particularly during the events of Heavensward, is portrayed as staunchly traditionalist, fiercely loyal to the Holy See, and deeply skeptical of any narrative that challenges the established dogma of the war.

Heretics and the Fractured Truth

Beyond the constant dragon threat, the Western Highlands are a hotbed for Ishgardian heretic activity. These are citizens of Ishgard who, disillusioned by the endless slaughter or touched by dragon blood, have forsaken their homeland to worship the dragons as gods. They establish hidden camps throughout the highlands, such as near Gorgagne Mills, and employ forbidden magic to harness aether and commune with their draconic masters.

The presence of heretics adds a complex, tragic layer to the zone's conflict. They represent a fundamental schism in Ishgardian society, forcing the Warrior of Light and their allies to confront the uncomfortable truth that the enemy is not a monolithic, alien force, but often their own people, driven to extremism by despair and the hidden lies underpinning the war. Encounters with heretics challenge the simplistic "man versus monster" narrative promoted by the Holy See, revealing the war's profound human cost and moral ambiguity.

Geography and Landmarks

  • Falcon's Nest: The central settlement and quest hub. A stark, functional fortress embodying Ishgard's militaristic culture.
  • The Weeping Saint: A massive, solitary stone statue of a saint, worn by wind and snow, which serves as a solemn landmark and occasional meeting point.
  • Gorgagne Mills: A ruined complex that becomes a focal point for heretic activity, showcasing the decay of Ishgard's infrastructure in the contested territories.
  • The Bed of Bones: A desolate valley floor littered with the immense skeletal remains of dragons, a silent testament to the scale and longevity of the conflict.
  • Rivers and Glaciers: Frozen waterways, like the Witchdrop, snake through the valleys, while glaciers such as the Whitebrim Front create formidable natural barriers.

Gameplay

The Coerthas Western Highlands is a level 51-55 zone, designed for players progressing through the early to mid-levels of the Heavensward expansion.

  • Main Scenario Quests: The zone is critical to the Heavensward narrative. The Warrior of Light arrives here to bolster Ishgard's defenses, investigate heretic operations, and pursue key objectives that lead deeper into Dravanian territory. Major story beats involve securing Falcon's Nest, confronting powerful heretical leaders, and uncovering clues about the true nature of the war.
  • Side Quests: Numerous side quests expand on the daily struggles of Falcon's Nest garrison, the plight of refugees and isolated homesteads, and the grim business of survival and burial in a warzone.
  • Hunting Log & Hunts: The zone features enemies appropriate for the Heavensward hunting log, including various drakes, wild yeti (Gulo Gulos), and elite dragonkin. The Centurio Hunts board in Falcon's Nest marks elite marks and notorious monsters unique to the area.
  • FATEs: Zone FATEs often involve defending settlements from waves of dragons or heretics, hunting large beasts, or assisting Ishgardian military operations, reinforcing the zone's wartime theme.
  • Gathering: The Western Highlands contain level-appropriate nodes for Botanist, Miner, and Fisher, providing essential materials for Heavensward crafting recipes. The frozen rivers and lakes offer unique fishing opportunities.
  • Travel: The zone is connected to the Coerthas Central Highlands via a southern pass and to the Dravanian Forelands through a tunnel in the east. Players attune to the aetheryte in Falcon's Nest for easy return travel.

Trivia

  • The Coerthas Western Highlands is a zone introduced entirely in Heavensward and did not exist as a separate explorable zone in version 1.0. The Coerthas region in 1.0 was a single, undivided area that was later split into the Central and Western Highlands for A Realm Reborn and Heavensward respectively.
  • The perpetual blizzards and reduced visibility in parts of the zone were intentionally designed to create a feeling of disorientation and danger, emphasizing the hostile environment.
  • Falcon's Nest's design, with its towering walls and central keep, is reminiscent of classic high-fantasy mountain strongholds, visually reinforcing Ishgard's isolated, defensive posture.
  • The ambient soundtrack for the Western Highlands is notably somber and atmospheric, featuring haunting choirs and sparse instrumentation that accentuates the loneliness and tragedy of the landscape.
