Central Shroud

zonesA Realm Reborn

Overview

Central Shroud forms the verdant heartland of the Black Shroud, the immense, mystical forest that cradles the city-state of Gridania. As one of the three starting zones for fledgling adventurers in Eorzea, it introduces players to the unique culture and spiritual traditions of Gridania's woodland society. Characterized by towering ancient trees, sun-dappled clearings, and a pervasive sense of living, watchful nature, Central Shroud embodies the delicate equilibrium between civilization and the untamed wild. The zone serves as the primary connective hub for the entire Shroud region, with pathways radiating outward to its eastern, southern, and northern counterparts.

History & Lore

The Rule of the Elementals

Central Shroud, like all of the Black Shroud, exists under the sovereign rule of the elementals—ancient, sentient beings of concentrated aether who are the true masters of the forest. Gridania’s history is defined by its relationship with these capricious entities. Following the Sixth Umbral Calamity, Gridanians learned to communicate with the elementals through Hearers, establishing the foundational Woodsinner's Oath. This sacred covenant permits limited settlement and resource gathering in exchange for strict adherence to the elementals' will and the atonement for past transgressions against the forest. Every action, from felling a tree to constructing a building, requires permission, lest one incur "woodsin"—a spiritual taint that angers the elementals and invites calamity upon the community.

Bentbranch Meadows and Gridanian Life

The primary settlement in Central Shroud is Bentbranch Meadows, a testament to Gridania’s sustainable coexistence with nature. Functioning as both a logging camp and a chocobo ranch, Bentbranch demonstrates the careful balance of utility and reverence. The settlement harvests lumber only from designated areas with the elementals' blessing, and its chocobo handlers work in harmony with the forest, raising mounts essential for travel through the dense wood. Life here is peaceful but governed by unbreakable rules. Newcomers to Gridania, including beginning adventurers, are often directed here to learn the ways of the Shroud and understand that survival depends on respect, not domination.

Sites of Significance

Several key locations dot Central Shroud’s landscape:

  • The Guardian Tree: An immense, ancient tree that serves as a spiritual landmark, often mentioned in Gridanian folklore as a watcher over the forest.
  • The Bannock: A large, rocky formation and waterway.
  • Entrance to the Tam-Tara Deepcroft: This sealed burial crypt, located within Central Shroud, serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that lurk beneath the Shroud’s tranquility. Once a sacred burial site for Gridanians, it has been corrupted by dark energies and undead, requiring adventurers to cleanse its halls.

The zone is patrolled by the Gods' Quiver, Gridania’s military defense force, and the Order of the Twin Adder, the city-state’s Grand Company. They maintain safety along the roads from threats like the Ixal beastmen of the nearby mountains, poachers, and the occasional corrupted creature or restless spirit.

Gameplay

Starting Experience

For players who choose to begin their journey in Gridania, Central Shroud serves as the introductory zone after the initial quests in the city itself. Early quests from the Adventurers’ Guild and Conjurers’ Guild often lead players to Bentbranch Meadows, teaching core gameplay mechanics while immersing them in the local culture. These quests emphasize the themes of balance, healing, and communion with nature, whether one is training as a conjurer, an archer, or a lancer.

Exploration and Connectivity

Central Shroud’s geography is designed as a central artery for the Black Shroud. Major aetherytes are located at Bentbranch Meadows and The Bannock, facilitating travel. Well-trodden paths connect to:

  • East Shroud: Leading toward the Ixali lands and the city of Gridania’s eastern gates.
  • South Shroud: Heading toward the more tumultuous lands bordering Thanalan.
  • North Shroud: The route to the city-state itself and the tranquil yet somber lands of the Greatloam.

Gathering and Resources

As a zone rich in life, Central Shroud is a primary gathering ground for Botanists. Logging nodes for various types of lumber (like Maple and Yew) are plentiful, providing essential materials for early crafting disciplines like Carpentry and Weaving. Mineral deposits are less common, in keeping with the zone’s wooded theme. The ambient wildlife includes docile creatures like deer and dodos, as well as more aggressive foes such as treants, wasps, and bandits, offering combat experience for new adventurers.

Dungeon: Tam-Tara Deepcroft

The entrance to the first major dungeon for Gridanian players, Tam-Tara Deepcroft, is found here. This level 16 dungeon is typically a player's second dungeon experience after Sastasha. Its story involves investigating a corruption within the burial site, fighting undead and voidsent, and is closely tied to early Gridanian questlines involving a missing Hearer and the sinister Lambs of Dalamud cult.

Trivia

  • Central Shroud’s ambient music, "Whisper of the Land," is a serene, flute-heavy piece that perfectly encapsulates the zone’s peaceful yet watchful atmosphere.
  • The design of Bentbranch Meadows, with its wooden structures built alongside and within living trees, directly illustrates Gridania’s architectural philosophy of integrating with, rather than replacing, the natural world.
  • In the original version of Final Fantasy XIV (1.0), the Black Shroud was a single, continuous zone. With A Realm Reborn, it was subdivided, with Central Shroud created to serve as the core woodland experience.
  • Chocobos caught in Central Shroud are typically forest-green in color, a palette that provides natural camouflage within the dense trees.
  • The elementals’ influence is subtly shown through gameplay: unlike other city-states, Gridania has no large-scale, walled settlements outside its main city, reflecting the strict limitations on land use imposed by the Woodsinner's Oath.
