Overview
Central Thanalan is the sprawling, sun-baked zone that directly surrounds the walls of the mercantile capital, Ul'dah. Serving as the primary starting area for adventurers who begin their journey in the Sultanate, the zone functions as both an introduction to the harsh beauty of the Thanalan desert and a stark display of the social contrasts that define Ul'dahn society. Characterized by vast, open plains of dust and stone, interrupted by rocky mesas and the skeletal remains of ancient ruins, Central Thanalan is a land where the relentless commerce of the city bleeds out into the wilderness. It is a land of passage, where trade caravans, hopeful immigrants, and desperate refugees all travel the same sun-scorched roads under the same unblinking sun.
Geography and Landmarks
The geography of Central Thanalan is one of practical, if austere, beauty. The land is predominantly flat, rocky desert, with sparse, hardy vegetation clinging to life. The imposing Steps of Thal, a massive stone stairway, marks the formal entrance to Ul'dah from the south, a grand architectural statement of the city's power. Radiating out from the city gates are well-traveled roads that quickly dissolve into dusty trails.
The zone's most significant settlement is Black Brush Station. More than a simple outpost, it is a vital hub on the ironway, the railway system that connects Ul'dah to Horizon and, by extension, the wider world. The station is a constant hive of activity, with merchants, travelers, and Brass Blades creating a microcosm of Ul'dah itself. It serves as the central questing hub for new adventurers, introducing them to the region's dangers and dynamics.
To the northeast lies the Sil'dih Excavation Site, a place of profound historical and morbid significance. Here, archaeologists and treasure hunters dig into the sands to uncover the remains of Sil'dih, Ul'dah's ancient sister city. The site is a grim reminder of a past conflict so catastrophic it led to mutual annihilation, a history buried but not forgotten.
The entrance to Cutter's Cry, a perilous underground cavern, is also located within the zone. This dungeon, infested with giant insects and subterranean horrors, offers a more challenging delve for adventurers, hinting at the deadly ecosystems that thrive beneath Thanalan's barren surface.
Society and Politics
Central Thanalan is a canvas upon which the core conflicts of Ul'dah are painted in stark relief. The zone is utterly dominated by the culture and economy of the city-state. The influence of the Syndicate, the council of ultra-wealthy merchants who effectively rule Ul'dah from the shadows, is palpable. Their wealth funds the infrastructure, their guards patrol the roads, and their interests shape the law of the land. The principle that "coin is king" is not confined to the city walls; it is the unwritten law of the entire region.
This mercantile absolutism creates a brutal social dichotomy. Dotting the landscape, particularly near the cliffs to the east, are ramshackle refugee camps. These are home to Ala Mhigan displaced persons, people who fled the Garlean conquest of their homeland two decades prior. In Central Thanalan, they live a precarious existence, viewed with suspicion by many Ul'dahns and exploited as a source of cheap labor. The tension between the entitled citizen and the destitute refugee is a constant, low-grade fever in the zone, a central narrative thread that introduces players to Eorzea's complex political landscape. The presence of the Brass Blades, Ul'dah's corrupt and often brutal city guard, ensures this tension is managed with force rather than compassion.
Gameplay Role
As a starting area, Central Thanalan is designed to gently acclimate new adventurers to the world of Eorzea. The terrain is largely open and easy to navigate, with clear landmarks and roads. The wildlife—including aggressive dodos, vicious canyon ants, and territorial goblins of the Bladekin tribe—provides straightforward combat challenges for fledgling heroes.
Black Brush Station acts as the central quest hub, with numerous early game quests originating here from local NPCs, merchants, and Brass Blades. (Note: Baderon is the Adventurers' Guild master in Limsa Lominsa, and Mother Miounne runs the Adventurers' Guild in Gridania; neither is based in Central Thanalan.) The quests establish core themes: dealing with local beasts, navigating the refugee crisis, and confronting the corruption festering within Ul'dah's power structures.
For crafters and gatherers, the zone offers essential low-level resources. Mining nodes yield copper and tin, while botanical nodes provide alumen and various desert shrubs. This makes the area a common training ground for disciples of the land and hand.
Even for veteran players, Central Thanalan remains a crucial thoroughfare. Its central location, connecting to Western Thanalan, Eastern Thanalan, Southern Thanalan, and Northern Thanalan, as well as housing the aetheryte plaza for Ul'dah proper, ensures it is a zone of constant passage. The Gold Saucer aetheryte shard also makes the zone a frequent destination for those seeking diversion.
History and Lore
The history of Central Thanalan is inextricably linked to that of Ul'dah. For centuries, it has been the city's immediate hinterland, providing a buffer and a first line of defense. Its most profound historical connection, however, lies buried in its sands.
The excavation site points to the War of the Sisters, the ancient and devastating conflict between Ul'dah and Sil'dih. This war culminated in Ul'dah's thaumaturges devising the "Trader's Spurn," a powder that turned corpses into zombies, which was catapulted into Sil'dih during a siege. The ruling sultan, Sasagan Ul Sisigan III, then spread the lie that Sil'dih had created the zombies themselves, using this fabrication to justify the city's total destruction. This dark truth—that Ul'dah, not Sil'dih, was responsible for the atrocity—remained buried for centuries until the Sil'dihn Subterrane investigations in the Endwalker era. The very ground of Central Thanalan is thus a grave for a forgotten city and a warning of the perils of unchecked ambition and forbidden magic.
In the modern era, the zone's history is written by the flow of refugees. The Ala Mhigan Exodus, following the fall of Ala Mhigo to the Garlean Empire in 1557 of the Sixth Astral Era, transformed parts of Central Thanalan into a permanent diaspora community. This event reshaped the social fabric of the region, creating the enduring refugee crisis that defines much of its contemporary story.
