Coerthas Central Highlands

zonesA Realm Reborn

Overview

Coerthas Central Highlands is a frigid, mountainous zone in the northern reaches of Aldenard, serving as the primary territorial holding of the Holy See of Ishgard. Once a region of temperate highlands and rolling green hills, the zone was irrevocably transformed by the Seventh Umbral Calamity into a desolate, snow-swept landscape locked in perpetual winter. It functions as a critical narrative and geographical bridge in Final Fantasy XIV, introducing players to the isolated theocracy of Ishgard and the millennia-old Dragonsong War that forms the core of the Heavensward expansion.

The zone is characterized by its harsh climate, sheer mountain cliffs, and the formidable Ishgardian architecture that dots its terrain. From the imposing battlements of Camp Dragonhead to the scholarly isolation of The Observatorium, the Central Highlands are a land defined by conflict, faith, and resilience against both the elements and the eternal dragon threat.

History & Lore

The Calamity's Frost

Prior to the fall of Dalamud and the eruption of Bahamut, Coerthas was a verdant region known for its crisp air, fertile valleys, and strategic mountain passes. The Seventh Umbral Calamity’s massive release of aether triggered a violent and sudden climate shift, plunging the highlands into an endless winter within a matter of years. Rivers and lakes froze, flora perished, and blizzards became a constant feature of life. This environmental catastrophe forced a hard adaptation from its inhabitants and severed many of the region’s tenuous connections with the rest of Eorzea.

Bastion of Ishgard

The Central Highlands are the first line of defense for the Holy See of Ishgard. The zone is patrolled extensively by the Temple Knights and dotted with fortifications, watchtowers, and military camps. Its settlements each serve a distinct purpose in Ishgard’s societal and military structure:

  • Camp Dragonhead: The primary fortress guarding the southern approach to Ishgard. It serves as a logistical hub, training ground, and quarantine checkpoint, fiercely commanded by its ever-optimistic castellan.
  • The Observatorium: A facility operated by the Ishgardian Orthodox Church, where astrologians and scholars study the heavens. Its work is deeply tied to Ishgard’s religious doctrines and its understanding of the dragons that haunt the skies.
  • Whitebrim Front: A stark, forward-operating base situated on the frozen Lake Tahtotl. It houses knights on the front lines of the conflict with the Dravanian Horde, constantly braving dragon attacks and the bitter cold.

The zone is also home to the Stone Vigil, a once-proud fortress now fallen to a dragon onslaught. Its overrun halls stand as a grim testament to the ferocity and persistence of the Dravanian enemy.

A Warm Heart in a Cold Land

The soul of Coerthas Central Highlands is inextricably linked to Lord Haurchefant Greystone, the illegitimate son of Count Edmont de Fortemps. As commander of Camp Dragonhead, Haurchefant becomes the Warrior of Light’s first true ally within Ishgardian territory. At a time when the Holy See officially shuns outsiders, his open-hearted enthusiasm, unwavering support, and genuine friendship offer a beacon of warmth against the physical and political chill. His administration of Dragonhead is marked by pragmatic compassion, making the fortress a rare haven for refugees and outcasts alike.

Haurchefant’s pivotal role in sheltering the Scions and the Warrior of Light after the events at the Steps of Faith cements his place in the player’s journey. His subsequent sacrifice during the assault on the Vault in Heavensward transforms the Central Highlands, and Camp Dragonhead in particular, into a site of profound memory and pilgrimage for players, forever coloring the snowy vistas with a touch of personal loss and enduring gratitude.

Gameplay

Progression & Quests

Coerthas Central Highlands becomes accessible during the A Realm Reborn main scenario, typically around level 35-45. The zone’s quests are crucial for progression, serving several key functions:

  • Introducing Ishgard: The questlines establish the culture, politics, and central conflict of the Holy See, setting the stage for Heavensward.
  • Military Campaigns: Players assist the Temple Knights at Whitebrim Front and Camp Dragonhead, undertaking missions against heretics, dragons, and the beastmen of the region.
  • Astrological Study: Quests from The Observatorium delve into Ishgard’s scholarly and religious pursuits, often involving the collection of celestial data or ancient relics.
  • Side Stories: The zone features numerous side quests that highlight the daily struggles of Ishgardian citizens, from provisioning the front lines to dealing with the dangers of the frozen wilderness.

Dungeon: The Stone Vigil

The Stone Vigil is a level 41 dungeon located in the northern part of the zone. Players are tasked by Haurchefant to brave this fallen fortress to recover vital airship schematics. The dungeon is populated by Ice Elementals, vigilant drake guards, and the formidable dragon Isgebind, who has claimed the Vigil’s central hall as its frozen roost. The dungeon’s challenging enemies and environmental hazards emphasize the tactical prowess and ferocity of the Dravanian Horde.

Hunts & FATEs

The zone features a variety of Full Active Time Events (FATEs) that depict small-scale battles with heretics, dragonkin, and beasts, as well as tasks aiding the Ishgardian military. Hunt targets for both daily Clan Hunts and elite Mark Bills can be found throughout the Highlands, ranging from aggressive wildlife like the Dark Heliodor to powerful dragons and heretical leaders.

Trivia

  • The drastic climate change in Coerthas is one of the most visible and lasting geographical effects of the Seventh Umbral Calamity shown in the game.
  • Early concept art and dialogue from 1.0 Final Fantasy XIV depict Coerthas in its pre-Calamity, green state.
  • Camp Dragonhead’s name and the dragon motifs throughout Ishgardian architecture are ironic, given the nation’s eternal war with dragonkind, and speak to a more complex, forgotten history.
  • The zone’s musical theme, "Solid," is a somber, orchestral piece that evokes both the grandeur and the isolation of Ishgard, becoming instantly recognizable to players.
  • Following the conclusion of the Heavensward story, several NPC dialogues and minor quests in the zone update to reflect the end of the Dragonsong War, though the climate remains frozen.
