Overview
Weaver is a crafting discipline dedicated to the art of transforming raw fibers and threads into finished textiles and garments. As one of the eight core Disciple of the Hand jobs, Weavers are the premier producers of cloth-based armor, robes, and accessories in Eorzea, catering especially to casters and healers whose combat styles favor magical attunement and mobility over heavy physical protection. The Weaver's Guild, headquartered in the bustling mercantile city-state of Ul'dah, stands at the heart of Eorzea's textile trade and fashion industry. Under the passionate direction of Guildmaster Redolent Rose, the guild champions the philosophy that clothing is not merely functional, but a profound form of personal expression and art.
History & Lore
The Heart of Eorzean Textiles
Ul'dah's dominance in the cloth trade is no historical accident. The city's strategic position along trade routes, combined with the arid Thanalan climate being unsuitable for large-scale agriculture, pushed its merchants and craftspeople toward luxury goods and refined crafts. The Weaver's Guild emerged as a central pillar of this economy, systematizing the arts of spinning, dyeing, weaving, and tailoring that were once scattered domestic skills. The guild formalized apprenticeships, established quality standards for thread count and dye fastness, and became the arbiter of textile innovation in the region.
Weavers source their materials from across Eorzea. Common plant fibers like cotton and flax are procured primarily through Botanists, while rarer materials such as diremite web, raptor sinew, and various silks are obtained from adventurers and hunters who brave the wilds and dungeons. This network of material sourcing makes the Weaver deeply interconnected with other crafting and gathering disciplines.
The Guildmaster: Redolent Rose
The guild is personified by its flamboyant and exacting leader, Redolent Rose. A visionary with an eye for detail and a passion that borders on obsession, Rose believes fervently that "clothes make the man, the woman, and the adventurer." To him, a garment is a story—its cut speaks of function, its fabric of origin, and its embellishments of the wearer's soul. He runs the guild with a theatrical flair, often describing fabric textures in poetic terms and seeing mannequins as silent muses. His leadership has pushed the guild beyond mere utility, positioning Ul'dahan weavers as the trendsetters for Eorzean fashion, from practical adventuring gear to the extravagant outfits worn in the halls of the Ul'dah Sultanate.
Philosophy of the Craft
Weaving in Eorzea is seen as a balance between art and science. The scientific aspect involves understanding the properties of different fibers: the warmth of wool, the breathability of linen, the strength of hempen cord, and the luxurious drape of silk. The artistic aspect is in the design, dyeing, and finishing—creating garments that inspire confidence, signify status, or simply bring joy through beauty. This philosophy is central to the Weaver's questline, which explores debates on form versus function, the ethics of sourcing exotic materials, and the responsibility a creator holds in shaping how individuals present themselves to the world.
Gameplay
Becoming a Weaver
Any adventurer who has reached level 10 can seek out the Weaver's Guild in the Steps of Thal in Ul'dah. After speaking with the receptionist, they are directed to Redolent Rose, who provides the initial quest, "So You Want to Be a Weaver." Upon completion, the adventurer receives their first needle and is inducted into the guild, unlocking the Weaver job and its starting gear.
Crafting Mechanics
Weavers use a combination of abilities to progress through a crafting recipe, which is divided into several stages:
- Synthesis: The core action, using Basic Synthesis or more advanced skills to increase completion progress.
- Quality: Using touch actions like Basic Touch or Standard Touch to increase the quality of the item, which influences the chance of creating a High-Quality (HQ) item.
- Durability Management: Each recipe has a durability meter that decreases with each action. Abilities like Master's Mend restore durability, requiring careful resource management.
- Condition: The state of the craft can randomly become "Good," "Excellent," or "Poor," modifying the effectiveness of subsequent actions. Skilled Weavers use abilities like Observe to wait for favorable conditions.
Weavers have a unique set of job-specific actions, such as Careful Synthesis, which provides reliable progress, and Waste Not, which reduces durability loss. As with all crafters, successful high-level weaving requires careful rotation planning, proper gear, and high-quality materials.
Progression & Recipes
As a Weaver levels up, they learn to craft an expansive array of items:
- Levels 1-30: Basic cloth and leather accessories, simple robes, and crafting materials like yarn and undyed cloth.
- Levels 31-50: More sophisticated caster and healer armor sets, including the iconic Acolyte's and Wizard's sets, and the ability to craft the Weaver's Artisan Gown.
- Levels 51-70: Gear for the Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers expansions, incorporating new materials like dwarven cotton and star velvet. This includes job-specific armor for new jobs like Red Mages and Dancers.
- Levels 71-90: Endwalker-era gear and beyond, utilizing materials from new frontiers such as the moon and the cloud seas.
A significant portion of a Weaver's work is also dedicated to the Glamour system. Many of Eorzea's most sought-after cosmetic outfits, from elegant dresses and suits to quirky seasonal costumes, are crafted by Weavers. They are also primary crafters of items required for housing, such as curtains, carpets, and bedding.
Specialization & Endgame
At the highest levels, Weavers engage with expert crafting recipes, which often produce best-in-slot gear for Disciples of Magic or materials needed for relic weapon quests. They participate in the collective craft of Skybuilders' items for the Restoration projects in Ishgard and the Firmament. Mastery is demonstrated through crafting intricate, stat-intensive gear that requires precise macro execution and the best available materials.
