Overview
Idyllshire is a ramshackle frontier settlement nestled within the crumbling ruins of an abandoned Sharlayan colonial outpost in the Dravanian Hinterlands. Serving as the primary endgame hub for the Heavensward expansion, it embodies a unique blend of scholarly architecture, goblin engineering, and adventurer ingenuity. What began as a lawless encampment amid forgotten lecture halls and libraries has evolved into a functioning—if chaotic—community where treasure hunters, scholars, and goblins coexist under a fragile cooperative agreement. Its position in the shadow of the colossal primal Alexander makes it a focal point for both scholarly study and imminent danger.
History & Lore
The Sharlayan Withdrawal
Idyllshire's foundations lie in a former colony of Old Sharlayan, established in Dravania as a center for academic research and observation of Eorzea. The colony boasted impressive libraries, lecture halls, and residential quarters, constructed with the distinctive white stone and elegant arches characteristic of Sharlayan architecture. However, in the years preceding the Seventh Umbral Calamity, the nation of Sharlayan adopted a strict policy of non-intervention in Eorzean affairs. The entire colony was abruptly abandoned, its scholars recalled to the motherland across the northern seas. The facilities were left to the elements, a ghost town of arcane knowledge and empty corridors.
Frontier Settlement
In the power vacuum left by Sharlayan's departure, the ruins attracted a motley assortment of inhabitants. Treasure hunters and adventurers drawn by rumors of lost Sharlayan artifacts established makeshift camps. Goblins of the Illuminati and other tribes, ever fascinated by technology and salvage, moved in to claim the strange machinery and materials. Over time, these groups formed an uneasy, pragmatic alliance for mutual protection against the hostile wildlife and roaming dragons of the Hinterlands. The settlement earned the name "Idyllshire"—a somewhat ironic title given its chaotic nature—from these early settlers.
Governance and the Goblin Accord
Idyllshire lacks a formal government. Instead, it operates under a cooperative accord between its major factions. The most influential voice among the goblin population is Chief Slowfix, who advocates for peaceful coexistence and trade with the "long-ears" (non-goblins). His pragmatic leadership has been instrumental in preventing minor disputes from erupting into open conflict. Day-to-day order is maintained through communal agreement and the shared understanding that chaos benefits no one. The settlement's economy is driven by salvage operations, the goblins' inventive (and often volatile) craftsmanship, and the steady influx of adventurers.
The Shadow of Alexander
Idyllshire's existence is perpetually underscored by the looming threat of Alexander, the primal-machine that slumbers nearby. Summoned by the Illuminati goblin faction, Alexander's goal is to create a "perfect, static world" by manipulating time itself. The primal's immense form dominates the local landscape, and the Illuminati's operations within it pose a direct danger to the settlement and all of Hydaelyn. Idyllshire thus becomes a crucial staging ground for adventurers and scholars, including the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, who seek to understand and ultimately halt Alexander's world-altering ambitions.
Reconstruction and Growth
A defining characteristic of Idyllshire is its visible evolution. As adventurers bring prosperity and resources through their endeavors, the settlement undergoes a gradual reconstruction. Over the course of the Heavensward patch cycle, collapsed roofs are repaired, market stalls become permanent structures, scaffolding appears on damaged buildings, and public spaces are cleaned and organized. This physical transformation mirrors the community's social growth from a precarious camp into a stable, if still unorthodox, township.
Geography & Layout
Idyllshire is built directly into and around the ruins of the Sharlayan colony. The settlement is tiered, following the natural elevation of the land.
- The Lower Tier: The main entrance and bustling marketplace. This area is dominated by goblin stalls, adventurer camps, and Rowena's Center for Cultural Promotion—a mercantile hub where high-end gear is exchanged for tomestones of esoterics and lore. The architecture here is a patchwork of original stonework and goblin-made additions.
- The Middle Tier: Features more intact Sharlayan buildings, now repurposed as workshops, inns, and communal gathering places. This area shows the most visible signs of ongoing repair efforts.
- The Upper Tier: Contains the most preserved structures, including a large, circular forum that serves as a central meeting ground. This area offers a clear view of the surrounding Hinterlands and the distant, ominous silhouette of Alexander.
The nearby mountains house Matoya's Cave, the secluded dwelling of the legendary witch Matoya, mentor to Y'shtola Rhul. While not part of Idyllshire proper, its proximity ties the settlement to broader networks of knowledge and power.
Culture & Society
Idyllshire is a cultural melting pot defined by pragmatism and salvage.
- Goblin Influence: Goblins are integral to Idyllshire's identity. Their unique speech patterns (referring to themselves in the third person, e.g., "Slowfix thinks this is good"), love of bargaining, and brilliant yet unpredictable engineering permeate daily life. Goblin technology, powered by aetherochemical cores and "funny onions" (allagan tomestones), is everywhere.
- Adventurer Spirit: The settlement thrives on the flow of adventurers, who provide security, rare goods from their travels, and the capital needed for reconstruction. The atmosphere is one of frontier opportunity.
- Sharlayan Legacy: Despite being ruins, the Sharlayan structures influence the settlement's aesthetic and remind inhabitants of the colony's original purpose: the pursuit of knowledge. Some residents, and visiting scholars, still study the fragmentary texts and diagrams left behind.
Gameplay Role
In Heavensward, Idyllshire serves as the expansion's main endgame hub after the main scenario quests direct the Warrior of Light there.
- Endgame Vendor Hub: Rowena's Center for Cultural Promotion is the primary location for players to exchange tomestones of esoterics and later tomestones of lore for high-item-level gear, weapons, and crafting materials.
- Access Point: It provides direct access to the 8-player raid series, Alexander, as well as various side quests, tribal quests for the Vanu Vanu and Moogles, and the Palace of the Dead deep dungeon.
- Reconstruction Efforts: Custom Delivery quests for NPCs such as Zhloe Aliapoh and Adkiragh allow players to contribute to Idyllshire-related activities, earning rewards and witnessing the settlement's visual progression.
- Crafting & Gathering: The settlement features market boards, summoning bells, and vendors relevant to high-level crafters and gatherers operating in Dravania.
Trivia
- The settlement's name is likely an ironic play on the word "idyll," which denotes an extremely happy, peaceful, or picturesque period or setting—a stark contrast to its initial state of dangerous disarray.
- Idyllshire's ongoing reconstruction was a novel feature for its time, making the game world feel dynamic and responsive to player activity.
- The goblin chief's name, Slowfix, is a typical goblin name reflecting a trait or profession—in his case, a deliberate, methodical approach to problem-solving.
- The settlement's daytime theme music is "Paradise Found," with "Homestead" playing at night, reflecting both the hope of the new community and the faded grandeur of the Sharlayan ruins.
