Revenant's Toll

settlementsA Realm Reborn

Overview

Revenant's Toll is a fortified adventurer settlement located in the war-scarred region of Mor Dhona, on the southern shores of Silvertear Lake. Beginning as a modest, rough-hewn camp, it evolved into the primary endgame hub for A Realm Reborn, growing in size and prominence in direct correlation with the rising influence of Eorzea's adventurers. Built amidst the physical and aetherial scars of the Battle of Silvertear, the settlement serves as a testament to resilience, becoming a bustling, player-centric town and a crucial logistical base for operations into surrounding high-level dungeons, trials, and the legendary Crystal Tower.

History & Lore

Foundation in a Scarred Land

Revenant's Toll was established in the aftermath of the Calamity, a direct consequence of the Battle of Silvertear that reshaped Mor Dhona. The region was left blighted by corrupted crystals and unstable aether following the clash between the great wyrm Midgardsormr, Father of Dragons, and the Garlean Empire's flagship, the Agrius. Into this dangerous yet resource-rich environment came fortune-seekers, researchers, and, most importantly, adventurers drawn by rumors of Allagan ruins and the mysterious Crystal Tower emerging from the lake's receding waters.

The settlement's name itself evokes its origins: a "toll" collected from the "revenants"—the spectral horrors and voidsent that plague the region—often in the form of spoils and artifacts recovered by those brave enough to venture forth. Initially, it was little more than a collection of tents and makeshift stalls huddled behind a simple wooden palisade, a precarious foothold in a hostile land.

The Adventurer Boom and Rowena's Rise

The settlement's fate changed with the arrival of two key figures: the adventurers who would become the Warriors of Light, and the shrewd merchant Rowena. As adventurers began systematically clearing threats and uncovering treasures in nearby dungeons like the Aurum Vale and Dzemael Darkhold, they needed a place to trade, re-supply, and plan. Revenant's Toll was perfectly positioned to become that nexus.

Rowena, with her keen business instincts, established the House of Splendors. She created a closed economy centered on "tomestones," a form of currency awarded for completing high-level duties. Adventurers would exchange these tomestones at her establishment for powerful gear and materials. This system cemented Revenant's Toll as the essential endgame hub, with Rowena's iron control over the flow of top-tier equipment making her both indispensable and infamous. Her presence turned the camp from an outpost into a permanent town.

Physical and Political Growth

Throughout the A Realm Reborn patch series (2.1 through 2.5), Revenant's Toll underwent dramatic physical expansion, visually reflecting the player's progression. The wooden walls were replaced with formidable stone fortifications. New buildings, including an inn, a larger market, and expanded barracks, were constructed. A towering aetheryte crystal was erected at its heart, facilitating easy travel.

The settlement also grew in political significance. While nominally independent, it became a de facto operations base for the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Tataru Taru, the Scions' resourceful aide, helped establish the Seventh Heaven tavern as a social and intelligence-gathering hub. Leaders from Eorzea's city-states and the Crystal Braves would frequently be seen within its walls, treating with adventurer representatives. Revenant's Toll transformed from a frontier camp into a recognized political entity, its influence born entirely from the collective might and reputation of the adventuring community.

Legacy and Current Role

While the focus of endgame activity has shifted to new hubs in Ishgard, Kugane, the Crystarium, and Old Sharlayan with subsequent expansions, Revenant's Toll retains its iconic status. It remains a fully functional settlement for players progressing through the A Realm Reborn storyline and its associated endgame content. The Crystal Tower raid series, now integral to the main scenario, continues to use the settlement as its staging ground.

Revenant's Toll endures as a monument to a pivotal era in Eorzea's history—a town built not by kings or armies, but by and for adventurers. Its bustling markets and sturdy walls stand as a permanent reminder of the community's power to carve out a place of safety and commerce from the heart of a corrupted land.

Geography & Layout

The settlement is built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the ceruleum-stained waters of Silvertear Lake. It is surrounded by the otherworldly landscape of Mor Dhona, dominated by glowing corrupted crystals, perpetual fog, and the looming presence of the Crystal Tower to the north.

The town is divided into two main tiers:

  • The Lower Toll: The original settlement area, housing the main aetheryte plaza, Rowena's House of Splendors, the Seventh Heaven tavern, and the majority of merchant stalls and crafting stations. This area is always bustling with activity.
  • The Upper Toll: Accessed via a central staircase, this fortified section contains the barracks, the headquarters for the Crystal Tower expedition, and strategic overlooks of the surrounding region. It has a more martial and organized feel compared to the market chaos below.

The architecture is purely functional, consisting of stone foundations, timber frames, and canvas roofs, designed for rapid construction and durability against the region's harsh environment.

Notable Locations & NPCs

  • House of Splendors: The commercial heart of the Toll, run by Rowena. It is the sole vendor for tomestone gear exchange in A Realm Reborn and features her associates, such as the melancholic Gerolt (blacksmith) and the enthusiastic F'lhaminn. This is a community observation and has not been officially confirmed by Square Enix.
  • Seventh Heaven: A tavern operated by Brennan, a contact of Tataru Taru. It serves as a social hub and a frequent meeting place for the Scions of the Seventh Dawn and other key figures. This is a community observation and has not been officially confirmed by Square Enix.
  • The Aetheryte Plaza: The central transportation and gathering point, constantly active with adventurers arriving and departing.
  • The Crystal Tower Expedition Base: Located in the Upper Toll, this camp is manned by G'raha Tia (during the Crystal Tower questline) and other researchers coordinating efforts to explore the ancient Allagan structure.
