Overview
Mor Dhona is a region in central Eorzea defined by profound devastation and breathtaking, unnatural beauty. Once a verdant landscape surrounding the aether-rich Silvertear Lake, it was catastrophically transformed fifteen years prior to the events of A Realm Reborn by the Battle of Silvertear Skies. The event unleashed a cataclysmic surge of aether that crystallized the terrain, creating a haunting vista of towering purple and blue crystal formations, petrified flora, and a lake partially frozen in shimmering stasis. This aetherially saturated wasteland has become a nexus of scholarly study, adventuring activity, and pivotal historical events, serving as the narrative and gameplay culmination of the base game's journey.
History & Lore
The Calm Before the Storm
Prior to the Seventh Umbral Era, Mor Dhona was a largely unremarkable, if lush, region. Its heart was Silvertear Lake, a vast body of water renowned for its immense concentration of aether, believed to be the wellspring from which all of Eorzea's aetherial currents flowed. The lake was protected by a legendary seal, and the land was dotted with small settlements and ancient ruins, including the mysterious, buried spire that would later be known as the Crystal Tower.
The Battle of Silvertear Skies
The fate of Mor Dhona was irrevocably sealed fifteen years ago during the Garlean Empire's invasion of Eorzea. The imperial flagship, the Agrius, led an aerial fleet towards the lake with the intent of seizing its aetherial energy. In defense of the land, the elder dragon Midgardsormr rose from the depths. Their titanic clash above the lake ended with Midgardsormr tearing the Agrius from the sky. The crashing airship struck the lake's great aetherial crystal seal, shattering it.
The resulting release of energy was apocalyptic. A wave of pure, uncontrolled aether swept across Mor Dhona, petrifying and crystallizing everything in its path. The landscape was remade in an instant. Simultaneously, this surge of aether traveled along the land's ley lines, reaching the distant beast tribes and providing the immense power needed to summon their primals, plunging Eorzea into further chaos. The wreck of the Agrius and the coiled, petrified form of Midgardsormr became permanent monuments embedded in the crystallized earth.
A Realm Reborn
By the time of the Warrior of Light's awakening, Mor Dhona has become a lawless frontier. The immense aetherial concentration attracts voidsent to the Fogfens, lures treasure hunters seeking Allagan relics from the newly exposed Crystal Tower, and draws scholars from across Eorzea. The most significant development is the rise of Revenant's Toll. What began as a simple adventurer outpost established by the Adventurers' Guild and the mysterious merchant Rowena grows into a bustling, player-driven endgame hub. Its fortunes are tied directly to the efforts of adventurers, who contribute materials to expand the settlement from a collection of tents into a formidable stone-walled town.
The region is also the base of operations for the Students of Baldesion and the Sons of Saint Coinach at Saint Coinach's Find, who lead the archaeological expedition to unlock the secrets of the Crystal Tower. This ancient Allagan structure, now fully exposed, becomes the focal point of a major storyline, revealing lost history and formidable threats sealed within.
Geography & Locations
Mor Dhona's geography is a study in contrast between natural formation and aetherial corruption.
- Silvertear Lake: The epicenter of the calamity. Once a vibrant blue, its waters are now choked with crystalline growths, and its surface holds a permanent, shimmering fracture where the seal was broken. The wreckage of the Agrius protrudes from its northern shore.
- Revenant's Toll: The central adventurer settlement, strategically located at the crossroads leading to Coerthas and the southern city-states. It features a market, inn, aetheryte plaza, and headquarters for key factions.
- The Crystal Tower: A colossal, silvery spire of Allagan design that dominates the eastern skyline. Its excavation site, Saint Coinach's Find, is a hive of scholarly activity.
- The Fogfens: A mist-shrouded, swampy area in the southwest, where the high aether concentration creates a permanent fog and attracts dangerous creatures and voidsent.
- The Twelveswood South Shade: The southernmost path, a corrupted extension of the Black Shroud that serves as the main entrance from Gridania.
Gameplay Significance
In A Realm Reborn, Mor Dhona serves as the primary endgame zone for level 50 content. Revenant's Toll acts as the central hub where players turn in collectibles for Grand Company seals and special currencies, purchase high-level gear, and accept key quests. The progression of the settlement's construction is visually tied to player participation in endgame activities.
The zone is the starting point for several major questlines:
- The Crystal Tower Alliance Raid series, beginning at Saint Coinach's Find.
- The conclusion of the Dragonsong War narrative threads connecting from Coerthas.
- Various side quests involving treasure hunting, voidsent threats in the Fogfens, and studying the region's unique ecology.
Mor Dhona's aetheryte is a critical travel point due to its central location and proximity to endgame vendors and questgivers.
