The Fell Court of Troia

Endwalker

Overview

The Fell Court of Troia is a level 90 dungeon introduced in Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker Patch 6.2, "Buried Memory." It is a massive, voidsent-infested castle that exists within the blighted realm of the Thirteenth Shard, known as the Void. The dungeon serves as a critical location in the post-Endwalker narrative, advancing the long-standing storyline concerning the Void and the fate of its inhabitants. Its name and Gothic, oppressive aesthetic pay homage to the kingdom of Troia from Final Fantasy IV, continuing Endwalker's thematic references to the classic title.

The Fell Court represents a perverse mirror of mortal civilization, where powerful voidsent have established a rigid, courtly hierarchy within the castle's decaying halls. Players, alongside the voidsent ally Zero, must brave this stronghold of darkness to uncover secrets vital to the effort of restoring balance to the lost reflection.

History & Lore

The Fell Court of Troia's origins are intertwined with the tragic history of the Thirteenth Shard. During the ancient conflict between the Ascians, this reflection was deliberately flooded with darkness by Igeyorhm, causing an apocalyptic event known as the Flood of Darkness. This cataclysm corrupted the world and its inhabitants, transforming living beings and souls into the monstrous entities known as voidsent.

In the aftermath, the strongest of these voidsent began to carve out domains within the twisted landscape of the Void. The Fell Court of Troia emerged as one such domain—a sprawling castle where powerful archfiends and their underlings mimic the structures of mortal royalty and nobility. They established a "court" not out of tradition or culture, but as an expression of predatory hierarchy and dominance, with the most powerful voidsent ruling over the lesser.

The dungeon enters the Warrior of Light's purview during the investigations led by the Students of Baldesion and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn into the Thirteenth. As the alliance seeks a means to save the shard from eternal stagnation, the Fell Court is identified as a locus of significant voidsent activity and power. It is believed that within its depths may lie knowledge or artifacts pertinent to understanding—and potentially reversing—the effects of the Flood.

The castle itself is a monument to voidsent malevolence. Its architecture, while reminiscent of Gothic fortresses from the Source, is warped and infused with darkness. Demonic iconography adorns its walls, corridors twist unnaturally, and an atmosphere of palpable dread permeates every hall. It is a place where the very concept of order has been redefined into a brutal pecking order of consuming and being consumed.

Gameplay

The Fell Court of Troia is a four-player dungeon designed for level 90 players. The party must fight through the castle's three primary sections, each guarded by a powerful voidsent commander acting as a boss.

Dungeon Mechanics & Progression: The dungeon path leads players through grand halls, narrow parapets, and a central throne room. The environment is perpetually dark, with pockets of shadow and eerie magical lighting. Trash pulls consist of various ranks of the voidsent court, including imps, knights, sorcerers, and court attendants, often employing area-of-effect attacks and debuffs themed around darkness and despair.

Boss Encounters:

  1. Deathgaze Hollow: A towering, winged archfiend that serves as a gatekeeper of the court. This boss employs wide-reaching claw attacks and dark magical orbs. Key mechanics include "Eyes on Me," which requires players to look away to avoid a petrifying gaze, and "Shadowbolt," which places large, telegraphed area-of-effect markers that must be evacuated.

  2. Scarmiglione: Named for one of the Four Fiends from Final Fantasy IV, this boss is a cunning and agile voidsent who commands the lesser demons of the court. The fight emphasizes control of adds and positional awareness. Mechanics include summoning packs of imps that must be managed and "Blighted Gloom," a room-wide damage-over-effect that requires healing throughput.

  3. Caustic Grebuloff: The self-styled "lord" presiding over the castle's central chamber, Grebuloff is a massive, bloated fiend who utilizes toxic magic and overwhelming physical force. The battle takes place on a circular platform. Primary mechanics involve managing pools of corrosive ooze that persist on the ground, dodging a series of heavy cleaves ("Dissolution"), and handling "Miasmic Blast," a high-damage raid-wide attack that must be mitigated.

The dungeon concludes with the party clearing the throne room, having disrupted the court's hierarchy and secured passage deeper into the Void for the ongoing story.

Trivia

  • The dungeon's name, aesthetic, and the boss name Scarmiglione are direct references to Final Fantasy IV. In that game, Troia is a kingdom of clerics, and Scarmiglione is one of the Four Fiends of the Elements (representing earth).
  • The Fell Court of Troia marks one of the first instances where players can consistently explore a location physically situated within the Void, as previous encounters with the Thirteenth were largely through brief visits or indirect means.
  • The dungeon's lore expands on the societal behaviors of high-order voidsent, suggesting that their mimicry of mortal structures is a twisted remnant of their origins before the Flood of Darkness.
  • It is a key location in the development of Zero's character arc, as she confronts the nature of her own voidsent kin and their entrenched culture of consumption.
