North Shroud

zonesA Realm Reborn

Overview

The North Shroud is the northernmost region of the Black Shroud, a vast and ancient forest that serves as the homeland of Gridania. This zone marks a dramatic transition in both landscape and climate, where the dense, sun-dappled woods of the central Shroud give way to a darker, more rugged frontier. Characterized by some of the forest's tallest trees and deepest shadows, the North Shroud functions as a buffer zone between the sylvan civilization of Gridania and the hostile, mountainous borders of Coerthas. It is a land of industry, conflict, and encroaching frost, dominated by the presence of the Ixal beastmen and the ever-present threat of their vengeful deity.

History & Lore

Geography and Climate

The North Shroud's geography is defined by its elevation and proximity to the imposing peaks of Coerthas. The air grows colder, and the perpetual winter that grips Ishgard's territories begins to bleed into the forest, creating a noticeable chill absent in the Shroud's heartlands. The zone is bisected by rivers and creeks, most notably the waters that flow beneath Fallgourd Float. The landscape features areas like Proud Creek and Peacegarden, serene names that belie the increasing tension found in this borderland. The further north one travels, the more the lush greenery is tinged with frost and the looming silhouette of the mountains.

The most infamous location within the North Shroud is the entrance to the Aurum Vale. Once a productive mine, it was abandoned after miners struck a vein of gold tainted by toxic, aether-saturated water. This miasma transformed the caverns into a poisonous den, corrupting the local flora and fauna and creating one of Eorzea's most hazardous dungeons.

Fallgourd Float

The primary settlement in the North Shroud is Fallgourd Float, a functional logging camp built upon a series of sturdy wooden platforms spanning a river. Unlike the more rustic and nature-integrated settlements of Gridania proper, Fallgourd Float is a hub of industry, established to manage the careful harvesting of timber from the northern woods. It serves as a vital strategic outpost for the Wood Wailers, Gridania's military order, and a base of operations for adventurers drawn to the region's conflicts. The settlement embodies the North Shroud's practical, frontier spirit.

The Ixal Presence and Garuda

The defining conflict of the North Shroud is with the Ixal, a race of avian beastmen. Once a majestic people capable of flight, the Ixal were cursed long ago, their wings withering and leaving them earthbound. This loss defines their culture and their desperation. They have established a significant presence in the northern forests, where they relentlessly work on a monumental project: the construction of the Dezul Qualan, a colossal airship they believe will carry them to their promised land in the sky, Xelphatol.

This obsessive endeavor is fueled by their worship of Garuda, the Lady of the Vortex. The Ixal summon this primal to unleash devastating storms upon their enemies, primarily targeting Gridania for denying them access to the crystals and timber they need for their construction. Garuda's violent tempests have scarred the northern Shroud, making the region a frequent battleground. The Ixal's story is a tragic cycle of loss and fanatical ambition, where the summoning of a primal is seen not as an act of conquest, but as a necessary means of salvation for their people.

Political Significance

The North Shroud's position makes it a geopolitical flashpoint. It is the frontline of Gridania's conflict with the Ixal, requiring constant vigilance from the Wood Wailers and the Order of the Twin Adder. Furthermore, its northern paths lead directly into the territory of Coerthas and the isolationist city-state of Ishgard. During the events leading into the Heavensward expansion, this border region becomes increasingly important. Tensions with Ishgard over refugees and the encroaching Dragonsong War begin to manifest here, making the North Shroud a zone where the conflicts of one expansion subtly give way to the seeds of the next.

Gameplay

  • Story Progression: The North Shroud is a key zone in the main scenario of A Realm Reborn. Players are often dispatched here to deal with Ixal incursions, investigate Garuda's influence, and complete quests for the Wood Wailers at Fallgourd Float. It is the staging ground for the confrontation with Garuda, one of the initial primal threats.
  • Dungeon: Aurum Vale: The dungeon entrance is located here. Designed for level 47 players, it is notorious for its challenging mechanics, including poisonous morbol fruits and dense, enemy-filled rooms, serving as a rite of passage for adventurers approaching the level 50 cap of the base game.
  • Beast Tribe Quests: The North Shroud is the central hub for the Ixal beast tribe quests. Unlocked after completing the main scenario quest "The Ultimate Weapon," these daily quests are unique in that they focus on crafting and gathering objectives rather than combat. Through them, players can gain reputation with the Ixal, offering a nuanced look at their culture and the practical needs that drive their conflict with Gridania.
  • Hunting Logs and FATEs: The zone features enemies appropriate for levels 20-30, making it a common leveling area for Disciples of War and Magic. It hosts numerous FATEs (Full Active Time Events), many of which involve repelling Ixal attacks or dealing with the corrupted creatures of the Aurum Vale's influence.
  • Gathering: As a forested zone, it is rich in botanical logging resources and mining nodes, catering to Botanists and Miners leveling through the 20-30 range.

Trivia

  • The chilling climate of the North Shroud visually foreshadows the environment of the upcoming Coerthas region, which players access directly from this zone.
  • Fallgourd Float's design as an industrial logging camp built over water highlights the delicate balance Gridania strives to maintain with the elementals of the forest, even while harvesting its resources.
  • The Ixal's crafting-focused beast tribe quests were the first of their kind in A Realm Reborn, establishing a model that would be used for other crafting-oriented tribes in later expansions.
  • The zone's music shifts to a more tense and foreboding track compared to the serene melodies of the Central Shroud, underscoring its dangerous frontier atmosphere.
