Overview
Southern Thanalan is a vast, sun-scorched desert expanse forming the southernmost reaches of the Thanalan region on the continent of Aldenard. Stretching from the outskirts of Ul'dah to the volcanic foothills bordering the Amalj'aa heartlands, it is a zone defined by extreme aridity, shifting dunes, and stark geopolitical contrasts. Unlike the merchant-caravanned tracts of Central Thanalan, Southern Thanalan presents a harsher, more contested frontier. It serves as a critical narrative crossroads in A Realm Reborn, introducing players to the existential threat of primals, the complex realities of beastman tribes, and the lingering scars of national displacement. The zone is a tapestry woven from the struggles of its inhabitants: the U tribe of Miqo'te clinging to an oasis, Ala Mhigan refugees preserving their identity in exile, and the militant Amalj'aa defending their sacred lands.
Geography & Climate
The geography of Southern Thanalan is predominantly that of the Sagolii Desert—an immense sea of rolling, golden sand dunes subject to relentless sun and searing winds. The landscape is largely barren, with sparse, hardy flora and rocky outcrops breaking the monotony of the sands. The climate is brutally hot and dry, with minimal rainfall, making survival away from water sources a formidable challenge.
Key geographical features include:
- The Sagolii Desert: The zone's dominant biome, a seemingly endless desert known for its disorienting dunes and deadly heat.
- Forgotten Springs: A permanent, lush oasis and the lifeblood of the zone, fed by underground aquifers. Its presence creates a rare, verdant pocket in the wasteland.
- The Broken Water: A vast, dry salt lake bed, its cracked earth a testament to the region's extreme aridity.
- The Fringes of Paglth'an: The southern and southeastern edges of the zone rise into rocky, arid badlands that mark the beginning of the Amalj'aa-controlled territory of Paglth'an, characterized by sulfurous vents and volcanic activity.
History & Lore
Southern Thanalan's history is one of conflict, exile, and fragile coexistence, largely shaped by its position as a buffer zone between Ul'dah and beastman lands.
The Amalj'aa and the Primal Threat
The zone is the primary frontline against the Amalj'aa, a proud, reptilian beastman tribe that venerates the primal of fire, Ifrit. The Amalj'aa view the deserts of Southern Thanalan as part of their sacred dominion and fiercely resist Ul'dahn expansion and prospecting. Their main stronghold in the area, Zanr'ak, serves as a staging ground for raids and rituals. The deep desert holds The Bowl of Embers, a sacred site where the Amalj'aa summon Ifrit to burn away their enemies and "temper" the faithful into mindless thralls. This location becomes the stage for one of the Warrior of Light's first major primal confrontations, cementing Southern Thanalan's role in the narrative as the introduction to the primal menace that threatens all of Eorzea.
The Forgotten Springs and the U Tribe
Amidst the dunes lies Forgotten Springs, an oasis settlement governed by the U tribe of the Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te. Led by the stern but fair U'odh Nunh, the tribe maintains a precarious independence. They are not formally aligned with Ul'dah but engage in trade and occasionally hire out their skilled hunters as mercenaries. Their existence is a constant struggle to protect their precious water and maintain their traditional way of life against the encroaching desert, Amalj'aa incursions, and the political machinations of Ul'dah.
Little Ala Mhigo: A Refuge in the Sand
In the eastern reaches of the zone sits Little Ala Mhigo, a settlement of Ala Mhigan refugees. Following the fall of their homeland to the Garlean Empire two decades prior, many refugees fled to Ul'dah, only to face discrimination and poverty. A group, seeking to preserve their culture and self-reliance away from Ul'dah's slums, established this remote community. It is a place of stubborn pride and simmering resentment, keeping the dream of Ala Mhigo's liberation alive. The settlement's presence highlights the ongoing refugee crisis in Thanalan and plants early narrative seeds that would fully blossom in the Stormblood expansion.
Gameplay
Southern Thanalan is a field zone accessible from Central Thanalan via the Gate of the Sultana. It is designed for characters approximately level 15-25, though higher-level content is present.
Activities & Content
- Main Scenario: The zone is integral to the early A Realm Reborn Main Scenario, featuring quests that lead to the first confrontation with the primal Ifrit at The Bowl of Embers.
- Side Quests: Numerous side quests originate from Forgotten Springs, Little Ala Mhigo, and the outpost at Zahar'ak, detailing local conflicts, tribal politics, and survival stories.
- Beast Tribe Quests: Zanr'ak is the hub for the Amalj'aa beast tribe daily quests, which become available upon reaching level 41 and completing the prerequisite quest, "A Voice from the Void." Completing these quests improves standing with the Amalj'aa, eventually allowing access to tribal merchants, mounts, and minions.
- Hunting Log & FATEs: The zone features enemies appropriate for the hunting logs of several classes and hosts various FATEs (Full Active Time Events), including defenses against Amalj'aa attacks and hunts for dangerous quarry.
- Crafting & Gathering: The zone contains nodes for low-level mining and harvesting, and certain enemies drop materials used in early crafting recipes.

Trivia
- The aesthetic and environmental storytelling of Southern Thanalan, particularly the plight of the Ala Mhigan refugees, served as a foundational preview for the themes and settings later explored in depth in the Stormblood expansion.
- The U tribe's naming conventions (using 'U' as the tribal prefix) follow the established lore for Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te tribes.
- Early in A Realm Reborn, the zone was a common location for player-versus-player (PvP) activity in the open world before the introduction of formalized PvP arenas and modes.
- The stark beauty and oppressive heat of the Sagolii Desert are often cited by players as a memorable example of A Realm Reborn's zone design, effectively conveying a sense of scale and desolation.
