Unukalhai

scionsHeavensward

Overview

Unukalhai is a male Midlander Hyur and a member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, though his origins lie far beyond the Source. A survivor of the Thirteenth, the reflection of the Source consumed by darkness and reduced to the void, he carries the Echo and a burden of loss that shapes his every action. He first appears following the events of the Heavensward expansion, working alongside the Warrior of Light to prevent catastrophe, and later resurfaces during the aftermath of Shadowbringers in pursuit of a deeply personal mission.

History & Lore

Origins on the Thirteenth

Unukalhai was born on the Thirteenth, one of the reflections of the Source that would eventually be swallowed by an unrelenting Flood of Darkness. Though he possessed the Echo, a rare and powerful gift, he was little more than a child when his world was destroyed, and no ability he had could turn back the tide that consumed everything he knew.

In the aftermath of that catastrophe, he was rescued by Elidibus, the Ascian known as the Emissary. Elidibus impressed upon him the necessity of preserving the balance between light and darkness across all worlds, and Unukalhai took this lesson to heart, swearing that no other world would suffer the fate of his own. During this period he also encountered Cylva, a woman from the Thirteenth who had likewise been saved by Ascians, and the two formed a bond rooted in shared grief and shared purpose.

Arrival Among the Scions

Following the defeat of Archbishop Thordan VII, the Warrior of Light returned to the Rising Stones to find a young, masked stranger awaiting them. This was Unukalhai, who presented himself as an emissary acting on behalf of a master he declined to name. He warned that the Warring Triad, three immensely powerful primals sealed within the floating Allagan installation of Azys Lla since the Third Astral Era, were at risk of breaking free. Thordan's reckless pursuit of their power had weakened the bindings holding them, and Garlean efforts to harness primal energy threatened to accelerate the process further. Urianger Augurelt confirmed the credibility of his account.

Unukalhai offered practical guidance to the Scions as they prepared to confront the Triad, including knowledge of enigmatic gems tied to the primals Bismarck and Ravana, who had already been resummoned by their worshippers. When the time came to address the Triad directly, he led the Warrior of Light, Krile, Urianger, and Y'shtola to Azys Lla and guided them to Containment Bay S1T7, where Sephirot was the first to threaten awakening. While Y'shtola and Urianger drew away Garlean patrols, Unukalhai helped unseal and defeat Sephirot. During their withdrawal, he crossed paths with the Garlean officer Regula van Hydrus, openly criticizing the Empire's dangerous ambitions, though Regula departed without escalating the confrontation.

The Warring Triad and Hidden Allegiances

Throughout the campaign against the Warring Triad, Unukalhai maintained a careful distance from full transparency. He spoke frequently of his unnamed master and framed his involvement as service to a larger cause, yet offered no elaboration when pressed. His knowledge of the Triad and of Azys Lla proved invaluable, and he remained a consistent presence in the Solar of the Rising Stones, where he kept a journal documenting the Scions' progress through the crisis.

Only when Krile challenged him directly about his true intentions did he betray any sign of inner conflict, and even then he swiftly composed himself. His disdain for the Garlean Empire was evident and unguarded, a rare crack in an otherwise controlled exterior. The identity of his master, Elidibus, remained concealed for some time, lending his early appearances an air of deliberate mystery.

A New Purpose After Shadowbringers

When news of Elidibus's death reached Unukalhai, he acknowledged that his feelings on the matter were complicated. The man who had saved him and given him direction was gone, and with him the framework that had defined Unukalhai's existence for years. Seeking something to fill that void, he turned his thoughts toward Cylva and toward the possibility of one day restoring the Thirteenth.

With assistance from the Warrior of Light, Urianger, and the scholar Beq Lugg, Unukalhai traveled to the First and reunited with Cylva in the Crystarium. Inspired by the First's own gradual recovery from its Flood of Light, they explored whether a similar restoration might be possible for the Thirteenth. To assess conditions there, they enlisted Taynor, a young man capable of opening voidgates, and Unukalhai used Nyelbert's crystal to learn the technique himself. Together, the two opened a gate large enough to gather meaningful data. Beq Lugg cautioned that finding a true solution could take years, but Unukalhai accepted this with quiet optimism. He accepted Taynor's invitation to help protect the First in the meantime, and settled into life in the Crystarium alongside Cylva.

Continued Research and the Thirteenth

Even as he made a home on the First, Unukalhai kept his long-term goal in sight. He sought out Ryne and Gaia to study their work restoring the Empty through the power of Eden, believing that their methods might offer a viable model for healing the Thirteenth. His preparations to eventually return to his ruined home, with Cylva at his side, continued steadily.

Personality

In his early appearances, Unukalhai projects an air of cool professionalism. He is measured in speech, sparing with personal detail, and careful never to let emotion interfere with the task at hand. His contempt for the Garlean Empire is one of the few sentiments he expresses without reservation, rooted in their willingness to court catastrophe in pursuit of power over primals.

His time on the First marks a visible shift. Freed from the role of mysterious intermediary and surrounded by people working toward a goal he genuinely believes in, he becomes warmer and more forthcoming. His friendship with Taynor develops quickly, and his enthusiasm for both protecting the First and restoring the Thirteenth reflects a young man finally permitted to hope rather than simply endure.

Name and Symbolism

The name Unukalhai derives from the traditional designation of Alpha Serpentis, the brightest star in the constellation Serpens. Serpens is classically depicted as a serpent held by Ophiuchus, and in Final Fantasy XIV, the symbol of Ophiuchus is associated with Elidibus. The name thus quietly encodes Unukalhai's relationship to the Ascian Emissary, marking him as something held within that figure's orbit long before the connection is made explicit in the story.
