Overview

Labyrinthos is a colossal, artificially sustained subterranean biome located deep beneath the island nation of Old Sharlayan. Revealed during the events of the Endwalker expansion, this immense cavern system represents one of the Sharlayan Forum's most ambitious and secretive projects: a fully enclosed, self-regulating replica of a natural world. Complete with forests, rivers, rolling meadows, and even a magitek-generated sky, Labyrinthos serves as a monumental research facility and a clandestine ark, embodying the pinnacle of Sharlayan arcane engineering and their controversial philosophy of survival through non-intervention.

The existence of Labyrinthos shatters the long-held perception of Sharlayan as a purely academic and neutral nation. Its discovery by the Scions of the Seventh Dawn exposes the true reason behind the Forum's rigid isolationism—not mere political neutrality, but a calculated plan to abandon the star in its hour of greatest need.

History and Lore

The Forum's Secret

The construction of Labyrinthos was initiated by the Sharlayan Forum generations ago, though its ultimate purpose was known only to the highest echelons of leadership. Publicly, it was presented as an expansive ecological and geological research station, a place to study biomes, climates, and ecosystems in a controlled environment, safe from the political turmoil of Etheirys. This aspect was genuine; scholars within Labyrinthos conducted invaluable research on agriculture, meteorology, and conservation.

However, the Forum's deeper motive stemmed from their astrological and historical research, which foretold the return of the apocalyptic event known as the Final Days. Concluding that direct confrontation was futile, the Forum dedicated its vast resources to a single goal: survival through evacuation. Labyrinthos was designed to be the construction and launch site for this endeavor. Its lower levels housed the secret shipyard where the Ragnarok, a vessel capable of traveling to the moon, was built, while the upper biomes were intended to preserve samples of the star's flora and fauna.

A Clash of Ideals

The Scions' arrival in Old Sharlayan and their investigation into the Forum's secrets led them to Labyrinthos. The discovery created an immediate and profound ideological rift. The Forum, led by Fourchenault Leveilleur (father of Alphinaud and Alisaie), viewed the project as the only logical course of action—preserving knowledge and life in the face of certain doom. The Scions, however, saw it as an act of profound cowardice and a betrayal of the star's people, advocating for unity and resistance against the threat.

This conflict crystallized in the confrontation between Alphinaud and Fourchenault at the Rostra within Labyrinthos, where the Forum's plan was laid bare. The Scions' resolve to fight, rather than flee, eventually swayed key figures within Sharlayan and forced a reconsideration of the Ragnarok's mission.

The Ragnarok Reborn

Following the successful defense of Garlemald and the realization that the Final Days were spreading, the purpose of Labyrinthos was dramatically repurposed. With the Forum's reluctant assent, the Ragnarok was no longer an ark for Sharlayans alone. The vast infrastructure of Labyrinthos was mobilized in a planet-wide effort. Its forges produced arms, its agricultural sectors supplied provisions, and its scholars worked alongside the Scions to decipher ancient Allagan technology needed to modify the ship. The Ragnarok was transformed from an instrument of escape into a vessel of salvation, its new mission being to carry the Scions to the edge of the universe in pursuit of the root cause of the Final Days.

In this way, Labyrinthos shifted from a symbol of isolationist fear to a beacon of global cooperation, its resources becoming vital to the star's last hope.

Geography and Layout

Labyrinthos is divided into several distinct, artificially maintained sectors within the cavern:

  • The Great Work: The primary entrance and central hub, featuring administrative buildings, dormitories, and the main aetheryte plaza. It connects to the various research sectors.
  • Aporia: A key waypoint and aetheryte hub within the zone, serving as a rest stop and logistical center for researchers and visitors.
  • The Archeion: A vast, circular archive containing millions of tomes and records, serving as the central library and research center for Labyrinthos's scholars.
  • The Aetherochemical Biosphere: A series of lush, pastoral landscapes with grasslands, groves, and rivers, maintained for agricultural and ecological studies.
  • The Path of Repentance: A darker, dense region dominated by giant fungi and subterranean flora, used for more specialized botanical and mycological research.
  • The Ragnarok Construction Bay: The heavily secured lowest level, where the starship was secretly assembled. After its launch, the bay remains as a historic site.

The entire environment is regulated by a combination of advanced hydaelynics (water control), arcane climate matrices, and immense crystarium fixtures in the cavern ceiling that simulate a day-night cycle.

Inhabitants and Culture

The permanent residents of Labyrinthos are primarily Sharlayan scholars, researchers, and support staff who live and work within the facility. Their culture is an intensified reflection of mainstream Sharlayan values: deeply academic, orderly, and initially insular. Prior to the Scions' involvement, their work was focused inward, concerned with preservation and pure research.

The mobilization effort saw an influx of outsiders—adventurers, crafters from the Crystalline Mean, and engineers from Garlond Ironworks. This interaction forced the isolated researchers of Labyrinthos to engage with the wider world, applying their theoretical knowledge to practical, urgent problems. The zone's narrative quests often revolve around bridging this gap, as scholars learn to see their work as part of a living, struggling world rather than a detached experiment.

Gameplay

Labyrinthos is a large, open field area accessed from Old Sharlayan. It is visited at two critical junctures in the Endwalker Main Scenario Quest (MSQ):

  1. Initial Investigation: Players first explore the zone to uncover the Forum's secret, culminating in the confrontation at the Rostra.
  2. Preparation for the Final Days: Players return to help mobilize Labyrinthos's resources to refit the Ragnarok, undertaking quests that involve gathering materials, aiding researchers, and bolstering morale.

The zone features:

  • Full weather and day/night cycles (artificially generated).
  • A variety of FATEs (Full Active Time Events) related to research tasks, ecological balance, and construction efforts.
  • Numerous side quests that expand on the lives of the researchers and the practical applications of their work.
  • Gathering nodes for Endwalker botanist and miner classes.
  • Unique wildlife, which are often specimens under study or creatures that have adapted to the artificial environment.

Trivia

  • The name "Labyrinthos" is derived from the word "labyrinth," reflecting its vast, complex, and initially confusing nature.
  • The concept of an artificial, underground world preserving life echoes ancient Allagan projects like Syrcus Tower, drawing a parallel between civilizations that choose to hide from calamity.
  • The music for Labyrinthos is notably serene and scholarly, emphasizing its purpose as a place of study, which creates a stark contrast with the apocalyptic revelations that occur there.
  • The design of the environment, with its perfectly curated landscapes under a cavern roof, visually reinforces the theme of Sharlayan's desire to control and contain nature, even as the uncontrollable Final Days rage outside.
