The Peaks

zonesStormblood

Overview

The Peaks is a vast and treacherous mountainous zone in the heart of Gyr Abania, serving as the rugged core of traditional Ala Mhigan territory. Characterized by its dramatic cliffs, deep river gorges, and winding mountain passes, the zone is a natural fortress that has shaped the culture and history of its people. During the events of Stormblood, The Peaks stands as a stark symbol of Ala Mhigo’s two-decade-long struggle, deeply scarred by Garlean occupation. Its landscapes are dotted with Imperial fortifications, while its people, centered in the weary settlement of Ala Ghiri, labor under the Empire’s yoke. The zone is a central theater for the conflict between the Garlean XIIth Imperial Legion and the fractured Ala Mhigan Resistance, embodying the physical and moral battlegrounds of the liberation campaign.

History & Lore

Geography and Significance

The Peaks form the formidable central massif of Gyr Abania, acting as a natural bulwark between the eastern lowlands of The Fringes and the southern reaches of The Lochs, which lead to Ala Mhigo proper. The terrain is defined by the mighty Velodyna River, which has carved deep valleys through the mountains over millennia, creating strategic chokepoints and narrow defiles. These geographic features have long made the region a critical defensive position, a fact exploited by both Ala Mhigan kings of old and their Garlean conquerors.

Settlements like Ala Ghiri cling precariously to rocky slopes, their architecture of stone and timber built to withstand the harsh mountain climate. Life here has always been one of resilience, defined by the rugged land itself. The zone’s infrastructure, including the vital Griffin Crossing, highlights the constant negotiation between the necessity of travel and the dangers of the landscape.

The Garlean Occupation

Following the fall of Ala Mhigo twenty years prior to Stormblood, The Peaks were swiftly subjugated by the Garlean Empire. The Empire recognized the zone’s strategic value, constructing a network of castrums, watchtowers, and checkpoints to control movement and suppress dissent. Garlean checkpoints and fortifications effectively seal the route east to The Lochs and the capital. For a generation, the people of The Peaks have lived under strict martial law, their resources extracted for the Empire’s benefit, and their spirits worn down by the relentless presence of magitek armor and Imperial soldiers.

Ala Ghiri exists in a state of grim normalcy, its citizens forced into labor for the Garleans while secretly harboring hopes of freedom. The occupation is visible in every aspect of life, from the propaganda posters to the ever-present threat of violence from the Garlean garrison.

The Resistance and The Griffin

The Peaks became a major focal point for the Ala Mhigan Resistance. Its complex terrain provided ideal hiding places for rebel cells, and its symbolic status as the nation’s heartland fueled the fight for liberation. The most prominent—and ultimately most destructive—figure to emerge here was the masked leader known as the Griffin.

Operating from hidden camps and leveraging his charismatic, fanatical rhetoric, the Griffin united many of the disparate resistance factions under his banner. His influence is immortalized in the name of Griffin Crossing, a key bridge in the region. The Griffin’s true identity was later revealed to be Ilberd Feare, a former Ala Mhigan refugee and member of the Scions’ short-lived Crystal Braves. Disillusioned by what he saw as the Eorzean Alliance’s inaction, Ilberd’s patriotism curdled into a vicious extremism.

It was within The Peaks that Ilberd orchestrated his most horrific scheme: the massacre of his own followers at Baelsar’s Wall, using their summoned aether and the Eyes of Nidhogg to call forth the primal Shinryu. This act laid bare the darkest potential of the resistance—a willingness to commit any atrocity in the name of freedom, creating a weapon of mass destruction that threatened the entire continent. The Peaks, therefore, is not just a backdrop for a rebellion, but the birthplace of its most tragic and morally complex chapter.

The Ananta

The native beastmen of The Peaks are the Ananta, a matriarchal race of serpentine humanoids. The Garlean occupation and the resulting strife fractured their society. The majority, known as the Qalyana, were tempered by their goddess, Lakshmi, whom they summoned in desperation for salvation. The tempered Qalyana became an aggressive force, capturing outsiders to swell their ranks.

A smaller, non-tempered faction known as the Vira rejected Lakshmi’s call. Led by the elder Uimet, the Vira saw the primal’s influence as another form of subjugation and chose instead to aid the Ala Mhigan Resistance, providing shelter and intelligence. This division within the Ananta mirrors the broader conflicts in the zone, exploring themes of choice, coercion, and the different paths to survival.

Gameplay

The Peaks is a large, open-world field zone accessible upon beginning the Stormblood expansion. The zone’s verticality is a key feature, requiring players to navigate steep paths and unlock aether currents to fully access the map with flying mounts.

  • Main Scenario Quests: The zone is a primary setting for the Ala Mhigan storyline in Stormblood, featuring quests that involve infiltrating Garlean facilities, aiding the resistance, and confronting the threat of the Ananta and the Griffin.
  • Settlements: The main adventurer hub is Ala Ghiri, which features an Aetheryte plaza, vendors, and quest givers.
  • FATEs: The zone hosts numerous FATEs, often centered on clashes between Garlean troops, Ananta, and resistance fighters.
  • Hunting Marks: The Peaks has its own set of Elite and A-rank Marks for the Hunt.
  • Gathering & Crafting: The zone contains nodes for Stormblood-level botanist and miner resources, as well as unique fishing spots in the Velodyna River and its tributaries.
  • Dungeons: The dungeon Castrum Abania is located in this zone. Narrative events here also tie into the broader Gyr Abanian campaign.

Trivia

  • The zone’s topography, with its high cliffs and river valley, is reminiscent of the Rocky Mountains or the Himalayas, setting it apart from the more arid landscapes of The Fringes and The Lochs.
  • The name "Griffin Crossing" serves as a lasting, albeit bittersweet, monument to Ilberd’s initial role as a resistance symbol before his downfall. This is a community observation and has not been officially confirmed by Square Enix.
  • The design of Garlean structures in The Peaks, such as Castrum Abania, emphasizes their oppressive, foreign nature, using stark metal and harsh geometric shapes that contrast sharply with the natural stone of Ala Mhigan buildings.
  • The moral ambiguity presented in The Peaks—through Ilberd’s extremism, the Ananta’s desperation, and the collaboration of some Ala Mhigans with their occupiers—is a central thematic throughline of the Stormblood expansion.
