Overview
Upper La Noscea is a mountainous inland region of Vylbrand, forming the rugged volcanic spine that separates the coastal lowlands from the more treacherous territories to the north. Characterized by steep cliffs, thermal vents, and mineral-rich hot springs, the zone serves as a critical transitional area within La Noscea, both geographically and narratively. Its most prominent feature is Bronze Lake, a large, steamy body of water heated by subterranean volcanic activity, around which much of the zone's activity centers.
The area is administered by Limsa Lominsa's Maelstrom, which maintains Camp Bronze Lake as its primary forward operating base. This outpost provides logistical support, intelligence, and a measure of security for travelers and adventurers operating in the region. Upper La Noscea represents the frontier of Limsan control, with the sovereign power of the Admiralty giving way to the untamed wilderness and the territorial claims of the native Kobold beastmen.
History and Lore
Geological Formation and Early History
The landscape of Upper La Noscea was forged by the same volcanic forces that created much of Vylbrand's dramatic topography. The peaks and ridges are remnants of ancient volcanic activity, with geothermal energy still manifesting in the numerous hot springs that feed Bronze Lake. The lake itself is not a true crater lake but a basin filled by these thermal springs, its waters saturated with minerals believed to have curative properties.
Before the arrival of Limsan settlers, the region was primarily Kobold territory, with the beastmen considering the mineral-rich mountains part of their sacred domain, O'Ghomoro. They harvested crystals and ore from the earth as offerings to their primal, Titan, and viewed the geothermal features as manifestations of the earth's power.
Limsan Expansion and Conflict
Following the founding of Limsa Lominsa, seafaring explorers and miners began venturing inland, drawn by tales of mineral wealth and the potential of the hot springs. The establishment of Camp Bronze Lake marked the formal extension of Maelstrom authority into the region, intended to secure resource extraction routes and monitor Kobold movements.
This expansion inevitably led to conflict. The Kobolds viewed the Limsan presence as a desecration of their holy land, leading to frequent skirmishes and raids on supply caravans and survey teams. The Maelstrom's presence at Camp Bronze Lake is, therefore, fundamentally defensive and reactive, aimed at protecting the routes to the lowlands rather than conquering the highlands.
Bronze Lake as a Crossroads
Despite the underlying tension, Bronze Lake has developed a unique culture of its own. The reputed healing properties of its waters have attracted non-combatants: physicians seeking to treat ailments, weary merchants taking restorative breaks, and even the occasional tourist braving the frontier. This has created a small, transient community of healers and entrepreneurs operating alongside the Maelstrom personnel, making the camp a curious blend of military outpost and rustic spa town.
The lake's strategic importance is twofold: it is a vital source of fresh water in the volcanic highlands, and it sits astride the main paths leading to the Kobold strongholds in Outer La Noscea and the navigable routes back to the lowlands around Summerford Farms.
Geography and Locations
Bronze Lake
The heart of the zone, Bronze Lake is a vast, shallow lake perpetually shrouded in steam from its geothermal inflows. The water maintains a warm temperature year-round and has a distinct metallic hue, giving the lake its name. Several small islets dot the surface, and the lakebed is rich in mineral deposits.
Camp Bronze Lake
Situated on the southern shore, this Maelstrom outpost consists of sturdy wooden structures built to withstand both the elements and potential attacks. It features a command post, barracks, a market stall area catering to adventurers, and basic amenities for travelers. The camp's aetheryte plaza is a constant hub of activity.
The High Road
A winding mountain path that forms the zone's central artery, connecting Camp Bronze Lake to the pass leading north into Outer La Noscea. It is heavily patrolled by Maelstrom forces but remains susceptible to ambush from the rocky outcrops above.
The Footfalls
A series of tiered hot spring pools and waterfalls located in the northeastern part of the zone, where the geothermal waters cascade down from higher elevations into Bronze Lake. This area is particularly rich in gathering nodes but is also a known Kobold infiltration route.
U'Ghamaro Mines
Located in the northwest, these are the visible entrance to the vast subterranean network of the Kobolds. While the deeper tunnels are inaccessible from the surface in this zone, the mine entrance is a constant source of unease for the Maelstrom, as Kobold war parties emerge from it regularly.
Gameplay
Progression and Quests
Upper La Noscea is designed for players approximately between levels 15 and 20. The Main Scenario questline leads adventurers here to investigate the growing Kobold threat and the rumors of primal summoning. Numerous side quests originate from Camp Bronze Lake, often involving tracking Kobold movements, rescuing captured miners, or gathering rare minerals from the hazardous springs.
FATEs
The zone's FATEs largely reflect the ongoing border conflict. Common objectives include defending Camp Bronze Lake or Maelstrom patrols from Kobold assaults, hunting down Kobold raiding parties, and eliminating powerful Kobold champions that emerge from the mines.
Gathering
The zone is a primary early-game location for both Mining and Botany.
- Mining Nodes: Yield various ores, including copper, silver, and volcanic rock. Unique mineral deposits found near the hot springs can yield rare crystals.
- Botany Nodes: Provide logs from the hardy trees that cling to the mountainsides, as well as unique herbs and algae that grow in the mineral-rich waters and steam vents.
Access to Instanced Content
Upper La Noscea provides access to the following instanced content:
- The Wanderer's Palace: A level 50 dungeon located in the zone, set in the ruins of an ancient Nym structure.
- The zone also connects to the broader Kobold conflict narrative, serving as a stepping stone toward the Titan-related content in Outer La Noscea.
Trivia
- The steam rising from Bronze Lake is not merely visual; it applies a "Wet" status to players who swim in the lake, which can be combined with certain electrical-based attacks from enemies for increased damage.
- The design of Camp Bronze Lake, with its wooden palisades and elevated walkways, is inspired by frontier forts and trading posts.
- During certain seasonal events, Bronze Lake has occasionally been decorated or used as a venue, contrasting its normally rugged, martial atmosphere.
- The zone's music track is a slower, more atmospheric variation of the general La Noscean theme, emphasizing the isolated, frontier feel of the highlands.
