The Churning Mists

zonesHeavensward

Overview

The Churning Mists is a majestic and ethereal highland zone located in the Dravanian region of Aldenard. Serving as one of the central locations in the Heavensward expansion, it is revered as the ancestral homeland of dragonkind and the domain of the great wyrm Hraesvelgr. Characterized by its towering, cloud-piercing peaks, deep ravines, and a perpetual, namesake mist that blankets the landscape, the zone exudes an atmosphere of ancient mystery and solemn grandeur. It is a place where history hangs heavy in the air, holding secrets that are pivotal to understanding the millennia-long Dragonsong War.

Beyond its draconic significance, the Churning Mists is also home to a bustling colony of moogles, whose settlement, Moghome, provides a stark and often humorous contrast to the zone's otherwise solemn tone. The area seamlessly blends breathtaking natural beauty with profound narrative weight, making it a cornerstone of Heavensward's exploration of truth, betrayal, and reconciliation.

History & Lore

The Seat of Dragonkind

The Churning Mists is considered the heart of dragon civilization on Hydaelyn. For ages untold, it has been a sanctuary and gathering place for the children of Midgardsormr. Its highest peak is crowned by Zenith, the aerie and dwelling place of Hraesvelgr, the great white wyrm and one of Midgardsormr's First Brood. From this vantage, Hraesvelgr has watched over the land and his kin for millennia. The zone is dotted with numerous dragon roosts—massive, nest-like structures built upon the peaks—and the crumbling ruins of ancient structures predating even the Allagan Empire, speaking to its long history as a center of power.

The Moogle Refuge

Following the great exodus from the moogles' original homeland, which was consumed by the Void, a significant population found refuge in the lofty, isolated peaks of the Churning Mists. They established Moghome, a settlement woven from giant leaves, vines, and whimsical architecture, safely removed from the troubles of the world below. The moogles live a life of (self-proclaimed) pomp and leisure, though they maintain a complex social structure revolving around their king, Good King Moggle Mog XII. Their presence adds a layer of vibrant, quirky life to the misty highlands.

The Truth of the Dragonsong War

The Churning Mists is not merely a backdrop but the stage for one of Heavensward's most critical revelations. It is here that the Warrior of Light journeys to seek Hraesvelgr's aid against Nidhogg. Instead of simple alliance, they uncover the foundational sin of Ishgard.

At Zenith, Hraesvelgr reveals the true origin of the Dragonsong War: a millennia-old betrayal. He recounts how King Thordan I and his Knights Twelve, during their initial journey to found Ishgard, came to the Churning Mists. They did not heroically slay the great wyrm Ratatoskr, Hraesvelgr's beloved sister, in battle. Instead, they betrayed and murdered her, then consumed her eyes to steal her draconic power, becoming the first "Heavens' Ward." This act of treachery, not dragonish aggression, ignited the endless cycle of vengeance and war. This truth, hidden by the Ishgardian Orthodox Church for a thousand years, reframes the entire conflict and becomes the key to seeking a resolution beyond mutual destruction.

Sacred Geography

Dominating the skyline of the Churning Mists is the formidable peak of Sohm Al. This mountain is sacred to dragonkind as their final resting place; it is where dragons go to die and, according to their beliefs, be reborn. Its importance makes it a fiercely guarded location and the site of a pivotal dungeon during the Heavensward storyline.

Gameplay

Exploration & Activities

The Churning Mists is a large, interconnected field area unlocked during the Heavensward Main Scenario Quest (MSQ). Players navigate its vertiginous cliffs and misty valleys primarily by flying mount, which is unlocked for the zone through the MSQ. The zone features:

  • Aetherytes: For fast travel, located at Zenith (initially unlocked via story) and Moghome.
  • FATEs: Various Full Active Time Events involving dragons, moogles, and other local creatures.
  • Hunting Marks: Elite marks from the Heavensward hunt system can be found here.
  • Gathering: Nodes for Heavensward-level botanist and miner.
  • Sightseeing Log: Several vista locations are scattered throughout the zone, rewarding players for finding and interacting with them.

Moogle Beast Tribe Quests

Upon reaching level 50 in any Disciple of the Hand (crafter) class and progressing sufficiently in the Heavensward MSQ, players can unlock the Moogle Beast Tribe quests in Moghome. These daily quests are crafting-focused, tasking players with creating specific items to aid the moogles in their grand construction projects, such as building a new palace for their king. The quests are infused with the moogles' unique personality—their laziness, pride, and peculiar bureaucracy provide significant comic relief. Reputation rewards include minions, mounts, and crafting materials.

Dungeon & Trial Connections

  • Sohm Al: The entrance to this level 53 dungeon is located within the Churning Mists. The story leads players here to confront the dragon Tioman and prevent a ritual that would threaten the land.
  • The Howling Eye (Hard) / The Minstrel's Ballad: Thordan's Reign: While the trial itself is accessed via Mor Dhona, the climactic battle against King Thordan and the Heavens' Ward is depicted as taking place amidst the peaks of the Churning Mists, directly above Zenith, symbolically returning the conflict to the site of the original betrayal.

Trivia

  • The zone's name is a direct reference to the "Churning Mists" from Final Fantasy VI, another cloud-shrouded, dragon-related location.
  • The music for the Churning Mists, "Landlords," is a serene and haunting piece that perfectly captures the zone's atmosphere of ancient, melancholic beauty.
  • Moghome is the site of the optional but memorable "Hildibrand" sidequest chain in Heavensward, further cementing the area's role as a hub for quirky stories.
  • The revelation about Ratatoskr's murder is often cited as one of the most impactful plot twists in Final Fantasy XIV, fundamentally altering the player's and the Scions' perspective on the Ishgardian conflict.
