Overview
The Rak'tika Greatwood is a vast, primordial jungle located in the western reaches of Norvrandt on the First shard. It stands as one of the most vital and unique regions in a world besieged by the Flood of Light. Unlike the sun-bleached, desolate landscapes that characterize much of Norvrandt, Rak'tika thrives beneath an impossibly dense, multi-layered canopy that filters the world's eternal daylight into a perpetual, dappled twilight. This natural fortification against the overwhelming light makes the Greatwood a rare sanctuary of shadow and a bastion for those who remember and revere the darkness that was once a fundamental part of the natural order.
The zone is a place of profound contrasts: vibrant, teeming life exists alongside the silent, overgrown ruins of a fallen empire. It is home to the reclusive Night's Blessed, who worship the darkness, and the diminutive Qitari tribe, who seek to uncover the past. Rak'tika Greatwood serves as a critical hub in the Warrior of Darkness's journey, offering both refuge from the Light and the key to understanding the ancient power needed to challenge it.
History & Lore
Ancient Ronka
Long before the Flood of Light, the Rak'tika Greatwood was the heartland of the Ronkan Empire, the First's parallel to the Allagan Empire of the Source. The Ronkans were a magically and technologically advanced civilization that erected monumental architecture, including the colossal Great Pyramid and sprawling temple complexes. Their society was deeply intertwined with elemental forces and the art of animation, creating guardians of stone and magic to protect their secrets. The empire's eventual collapse left its magnificent structures to be reclaimed by the relentless jungle, though their guardians and wards remain active, slumbering amidst the roots and vines.
A Sanctuary from the Light
The Greatwood's exceptional ecological trait—its light-blocking canopy—took on monumental significance after the Flood. As the endless light scorched other regions, Rak'tika became a natural refuge. Its shadows offered physical relief from the burning sky and spiritual solace for those who refused to forget the night. This attracted individuals and groups who clung to older traditions, culminating in the formation of the Night's Blessed.
The Night's Blessed
The Night's Blessed is a community founded not on bloodline, but on shared belief. Led by the steadfast and compassionate Runar, they have made their home in the settlement of Slitherbough. The Blessed view darkness not as a curse or an absence, but as a sacred, nurturing force essential for rest, reflection, and growth. They preserve rituals, stories, and knowledge related to the night, acting as living archivists for a concept the wider world fears and shuns. Their faith is practical and resilient, focused on community survival and the preservation of truth in a world of dangerous dogma.
Inhabitants and Culture
- The Night's Blessed: Life in Slitherbough is one of quiet determination. The Blessed are foragers, hunters, and scholars of the dark. They maintain a wary but generally peaceful existence, defending their home from the wild beasts and sin eaters that encroach upon the forest's edges. Their reverence for darkness made them natural allies to Y'shtola, who arrived with knowledge of true night.
- The Qitari: A small, rodent-like beastman tribe indigenous to the Greatwood. The Qitari are curious gatherers and nascent archaeologists with a deep, instinctual drive to collect shiny objects and historical artifacts. Their beast tribe quests involve assisting them in formalizing their digs at Ronkan sites, helping to piece together the history of the forest and its ancient inhabitants. They are generally non-confrontational and more interested in discovery than conflict.
- The Fae: While the capricious pixies of Il Mheg are the primary residents of the neighboring kingdom, their influence and magic seep into Rak'tika's northern waterways, a region known as the Source of the Fae. This area blurs the boundaries between the realms, carrying the touch of glamour and mischief into the jungle.
Role in Shadowbringers
The Warrior of Light arrives in Rak'tika Greatwood seeking the second Lightwarden. They are guided to Slitherbough, where they are reunited with Y'shtola. Having been stranded on the First for years, Y'shtola has immersed herself in the study of Ronkan lore under the alias "Master Matoya," earning the deep trust and affection of the Night's Blessed.
Y'shtola's research reveals that the Ronkans possessed profound knowledge of elemental balance and aetherial manipulation. She deduces that the Great Pyramid, the heart of Ronkan power, holds the key to confronting the Lightwarden Eros, which lurks within the ancient Ronkan temple dungeon known as The Qitana Ravel. The subsequent journey involves awakening ancient Ronkan guardians, proving one's worth to the empire's ancient defenses, and ultimately venturing into The Qitana Ravel to defeat Eros and restore night to the Greatwood. (Note: Dohn Mheg is a separate dungeon located in Il Mheg, not in or accessed from Rak'tika.) The zone's narrative arc powerfully ties the ancient past to the present struggle, demonstrating how forgotten knowledge can become the weapon needed to save the future.

Trivia
- The name "Rak'tika" is likely derived from "Raktapata," a Sanskrit term for a type of tree or a red-colored plant, fitting the jungle setting.
- Y'shtola's alias "Master Matoya" is a direct reference to her mentor on the Source, the Archon Matoya, blending her respect for her teacher with her role as a guide to the Night's Blessed.
- The aesthetic and concept of a jungle sheltering ancient ruins and a darkness-worshipping cult are reminiscent of the "Golmore Jungle" and the "Eryut Village" from Final Fantasy XII.
- The zone's theme music, "Civilizations," with its haunting vocals and rhythmic percussion, is widely celebrated by the player base for its atmospheric depth and emotional resonance, perfectly capturing the zone's spirit of ancient mystery and enduring hope.
